Reason for not using a H1 Tag

I run a website which is a spin-off from another (way more popular) website. Main difference is language. Furthermore it's the same concept. That websites has around 500k visitors monthly, SEO audits were done etc..

So we have these user generated content pages (for example a page with a review on it) but all those pages dont have H1 tags. Title has a H2 tag. They told me this was done on purpose...

Does anyone has a clue why? Should i just change this?

Part of it is the hierarchical layout of your header tags. If you start with an H2 as the title, and then you go down to H3 for paragraphs, and down to H4 for sub-paragraphs, Google will probably understand what you're trying to do. Now, having multiple H2 in that scenario can definitely be problematic and will certainly affect the way your website is parsed and your ranking in SERPs.

Maybe because your site is a brand that stands for a certain topic, the other paragraph should indicate the relation of it.

It's a semantics issue. Every page should start on H1. H1 is the header that describes your entire page as a whole. Google doesn't understand words. That is what HTML is for.

Semantics tells machines what is what in the page. And H1 has a higher weight in the page than an H2. That is why there is an H1, to an H6. They tell machines what is the most important on a page, and what is least important.

If for some reason your developer or write is using H2 because they render smaller on a page, then they are using HTML incorrectly. Styling shouldn't play a factor in your HTML. That is what CSS is for.

not having H1 tags goes against everything every seo website and seo experts say. search for any niche such as : best diet, best gardening tools, best xyz.... all the top serp positions have h1 tag.

so you feel lucky?!* You want to compete in seo game and not have H1 tag?! please don't!
