A few of those categories were at 8% and even 10% before. This will slash most affiliates' incomes by 1/2.

I think they will be shutting their aff program down pretty soon.

I think this is fairly old news by now but yes it will certainly hurt a lot of affiliates. Imagine having a travel/luggage site. Ouch.

There's plenty of alternatives to Amazon affiliate which offer better cookies and commission. If you're bringing in decent traffic you can sometimes arrange affiliate directly with the manufacturer.

I don't think they'll scrap their affiliates entirely, I think they'll just cut commission for everything right down to perhaps 1-2%

They won't get rid of the affiliate program, but they'll likely push it down to the 2-3% range, to be in line with many other competitors.

Amazon has solidified themselves as THE online store for all sorts of goods, so affiliates are nowhere near as valuable today, as they were 5 years ago.

It sucks, but that's how it is. Don't expect Amazon to increase the rates without a very large competitor trying to take their market share.

its a shame, but they depend on affiliates along with depending on the third party sellers, thye make more commision off a third party seller than bothering selling the item themselves in some cases

I doubt they depend on affiliates as much as they did a decade ago. Now everyone buys everything. They have become the Google of shopping and not a single billion dollar corporation has moved in and challenged their affiliate program (yet).

Amazon has become such a POWERFUL brand that it has a 'built in' marketing mechanism for drawing new customers and keeping old ones

Affiliates are 'useful' to Amazon only to the extent they provide VALUE ADDED traffic conversion ability - ie., reviews / special product discovery tools / etc

This usefulness doesn't look permanent...
