G Webmaster Incorrect Position Listings?

Hi all.

Anyone had this issue with G webmaster? It is showing as position 1 for a keyword when it's far from reality! The keyword gets about 74k searches per month and I am certainly not no 1 for the KW. It's been showing for a week or so now and even when I do a private search I aint no 1!

GSC is nothing but actually data from real queries. Just because you dont understand it, doesnt mean its wrong.

I never said it was wrong? I wanted to know why it would show position as 1 when it is not - even after a while.

You say 74k queries. But from the looks of it your URL is only appearing 105 times in a week?

The average position for those 105 impressions may indeed be 1.

May be a particular locale perhaps - you need to find out who it is appearing #1 for , and then figure out why it isnt ranking for the audience your ranking for and inparticular only get 105 impressions from 74k queries,

You should manually check positions in a web browser. GSC may not necessarily be correct. Sometimes the new posts are instantly given good SERPs and the ranking slowly falls. I guess you've reached position 1 when you posted but the post faded away. So, GSC might be showing the average position as 1.

@Danielharper summarized it right. We don’t have the access to dig deep down to understand the data.

That’s 100% innacurate. GSC is always correct. It fetches data based from the actual results.
