That isn't what offends people. This thread has nothing to do with "sir". It's about the very inappropriate usage of "dear". There is an appropriate use of "dear" and an inappropriate use of "dear". It's the inappropriate (and very frequent) use of "dear" that prompted me mentioning it and several other people feeling the same way.
