Today, the Notre Dame cathedral in France burned to the ground.

Historical significance and background:

Very interesting discussions taking place on Twitter and other social media websites.

This will dominate the news cycle for the next 24 hours, and then, likely, never be discussed heavily again.

Personally, I am not a believer and do not think much of churches, however, hopefully they will be able to handle the situation. I heard a firefighter has unfortunately seriously injured in the firefighting.

3 churches were just burned down in the USA, too. Very strange. I'm with @Finn on this, but still, hate to see stuff like this happening.

It's their most visited attraction and one of historical importance, a sad day. I've been to it and it's a stunning building, huge

Poor bastards!
I feel bad for the building, glad I was able to visit it.

What most people havn't picked up on and certainly what the media hasn't picked up on was that there was tons upon tons of lead in that roof. That smoke is highly toxic!

Our prayers are sent. Such tragic things happen everyday but when things like this happen to historic buildings... It is such a terrible thing to see. :(

Im so glad I had the chance to visit it, that building was amazing irl. There was a small gyros place next to it owned by a greek a guy, and he was shouting something to us, we went there and he offered some free meat as samples. We ate there like 3 times during our stay. Direct marketing works.

that building witnessed the French revolution, now is gone in few hours lol
probably it's just karma

Part of my family lives in Paris, they say it's a tragic for the whole country, after those raids now this... dang Paris...

Truly heart wrenching to see such history lost. 850 years of knowledge up in smoke.

Here's a 360º view of Notre Dame HERE

Sadly here's what's left.

I feel sad when I saw this . This is so awesome man-made creation

The slow or rather weak response to contain this incident might give bad people some ideas.
