The vibe has been there for some time that Youtube was losing it.

Youtube screwed its 'creator' class.

If you built a niche, 2008-2016, invested time and effort, you got screwed.

How many creators were screaming about demonetisation.

You never had any control

You never had a 'lease' on the space or platform.

You made free content, they made money, you made less money

There's a million more like you.

You are replaceable and expendable.

If you burn yourself out trying to hit views/likes/plays/subs, then fuck you. There's 27,000 minutes uploaded every minute. We'll find the next best thing.

The Algorithm is a human based choice matrix. It's not 'AI'. It's not 'neutral'.

It's a choice. Made by HQ, for commercial reasons. It's then programmed into the AI.

The Golden Age of free piracy via youtube, where all IP was steal-able, is now being replaced by the Monolith IP Rights Enforcement bot that serves the same Media Conglomerates that operate the world.

You've seen what happens when they're left to be independent, like Microsoft Chat Bot. Sooner or later they start doing No No stuff like Nazi Talk.

Given that EVERYTHING is steal-able on youtube with a downloader, music, movies, porn, weird stuff, Nazi's, it's all up there and popular.

If the Algorithm was based solely on 'popular' the front page would be incels, boobs, more boobs, boobs and pirated movies uploaded from Pakistan that exist for 4 hours on one URL and then are killed, replaced by another mushroom popping up somewhere else.

This hearkens back to the lie that they're not Publishers, they're 'platforms'...until they do a $$ deal with Publishers/launch their own music service and WOW? OMG? Piracy? NOOO!!! Quick stop that!

If I was a niche Vlogger who had found a way to make $ 2008-2016 and suddenly the game changed would I be a little peeved and bitch about it? Sure.

If I was a marketing person and kept my eyes open, would I have pulled client energy from a losing proposition a while ago? Probably.

And if I notice when background thinking becomes mainstream might I post about it? I guess so.

With their Database I wouldn't do a thing. I'd just let the market decide what it wants and then occasionally, when I get yelled at by pressure groups, I'd put up a figleaf, or tweak out contentious stuff, always one step behind, always reactive, always selling ads and then making apologies.

I'd only ever start enforcement when I had to, or there was a driving commercial reason to do so, like money.

Just like how they operate today

This includes multiple countries, politics, stock exchange, etc.

Let's assume:
For whatever reason, YT has deleted entire video content, subscribers, everything.

What happens?
Old users are typing.....and new (old users) who never had guts to start their own channel are more than motivated to do so. Not to mention that every upcoming kid will end up not on Google or any other platform, but YT 1st.

From the other hand, brand history, visuality, options. All this counts.
For example, almost anybody would say you that YT can make at least one edit. Add new feature.
Many features could be useful (perhaps) but you won't see em never.

You know... there is no need to expand this, at least not for me.
Everything changes, those who don't believe it now, they do later.

One who adapts and diversifies will survive. It's a well known thing that you shouldn't rely on a single platform.
Creators nowadays are smart enough to build an audience on multiple platforms. They have dedicated fans who'll follow them to whatever platform they move on to.
Viners moved on to YouTube. Gaming youtubers moved on to twitch.
Facebook videos is getting there now. They've even introduced monetization which is not that good at the moment but will definitely get better.
You only have to cry about YouTube if you're one of those shitty compilation channels. Real creators would divert their audience to other platforms as per their will.

I don't really get this point... Are you complaining that YT are enforcing copyright law?

I get that this is BHW, and that using copyrighted material is fair game in the pursuit of getting that bread, but you can't bitch them out for following the laws.

If they ignore them, they would quickly cease to exist.

Not complaining at all. Pointing out that they have been selective in rights enforcement and that for quite some time, and often with the tacit (and yes sometimes overt) participation of rights holders, they have exploited piracy for ad sales.

For example, clients of mine who use online Music distribution services can DCMA/takedown music of theirs within minutes of uploading.

They upload a videoclip they have made for a music video and BING the system flags it.

if YT can do it for my clients, hells bells they can do it for anyone. It implies that if music is still up there from Warners or BMG, it's because they are OK with it.

My guess is though, that it's gonna get nastier and meaner and meaner.

I'm expecting a massive jump in enforcement for anything Independent and an 'oops, we know this entire album is up here pirated but we're looking the other way in conjunction with the record label, unless of course, you do it in which case we'll violate you' which is their right.

On the whole, it bodes well for my niche, as the rights enforcement tech is strong and increases the value of IP rights from .00000001 (lol) to .000001 (heh).

Every little bit helps.

Meanwhile, they are massively shafting the crop of makers they sponsored 2008-2016 so if your business was built around it oops. sorry.

My thinking was like this:

Don't trust them
Don't build your business in a way that makes it vulnerable to them
don't play their game and invest content creation time to suit their needs cos they shaft you.
