Can someone explain Instagram engagement rates?

So I'm growing my old account with 25k followers and the engagement is shockingly low but it is improving. My recent engagement has been pretty consistent but the rate is slowly improving. Are engagement rates based on the last 10 posts for example or is it calculated from every post I have done? Will deleting/archiving photos from years ago with nearly no likes improve this?

Engagement rate is just a metric. You can delete old posts with bad engagement to make it seem like your account isnt so bad, but that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Usually people say they have around an x-xx% engagement which is more of a recent average of engagement like you mentioned.

That's what I thought but if my posts are getting the same amount of likes/comments over those 12 posts why would my engagement rate be improving?

True I guess I'll have to dig deeper into the analytic tools. It's not a bad thing my rates improving I'm just trying to understand it all so I can grow quicker lol

Deleting old posts will not help , but if you remove ghost followers from your account your engagement will surely boost

I do want to do this but my bot doesn't have an option to scrapte ghost followers

There are various ghost followers removal tools ( search on google ) - but read reviews first before using them

I have seen some 3rd party apps just not wanting to login into one whilst botting
