How to Maintain Ranking When the Year Changes?

Let's say right now I rank #1 for the following keyword:

"xxx yyy 2019"

And my page title contains "xxx yyy 2019"

When the year changes to 2020, I change my title to:

"xxx yyy 2020"

Unfortunately, a lot of people still search for they old keyword with the previous year "xxx yyy 2019" . In fact, they keep searching for the previous year for a few months after the year changes.

So my question is this: How can I maintain my #1 ranking for the keyword "xxx yyy 2019" after I change my title to "xxx yyy 2020"?

If this is not possible, what's the best practice to affect my rankings as little as possible for the old keyword?

I prefer not to use Year in the Title & URL. But, I use the keyword (XXX YYY 2019) in the 1st Paragraph & H1 or H2 Tags. After the year change, I update content & replace the keywords with XXX YYY 2020.

I understand what you're saying. But how do you maintain your rank for the old keyword "xxx yyy 2019" after you've made the changes to your content? Now you'll start ranking for the new keyword, but won't you fall in the SERPs for the old one that you used to previously rank well for?

You can technically keep those old keywords in the content along with new keywords 2020. I mean, update the content very smartly that you can insert both keywords at a time, But I never tried it.
