Some hacker actually took old DVD lasers and hacked those into mosquito killing bots. I remember seeing that guy in a defcon talk but I can't find the link right now. Here's a similar video (pretty sure it's the same guy who made the bot in action in the video) :

Edit 2: Got the video atlast! Sorry it is not defcon talk, but Ted Talk show. The whole presentation is pretty interesting. THe mostquito killing part is around 14:30 in the video..

Probably. They are actually tracking a lot of things before firing the laser. As he said in the speech, the software even tracks if it's a female mosquito; before firing the laser.
