How much is TOO much for Link Building?

once i was doing 10 to 15 links per day

but i think up to 5 links per day is enough

I blasted my money site and results were good. I was just lucky no harm was made I assume.

Longterm just be careful unless you're intending to go VERY blackhat and are ok with quick gains followed by getting destroyed and starting over. It all just depends on your niche and goals. I've been out of the link spamming game a few years now, but even with quality links you want to try and keep your link velocity as natural as possible and make sure you're keeping your anchor text natural as well. Also bear in mind how you're spreading your links over your site's pages, I had trouble by focusing all my links on too few pages in the past.

one of the hardest niches

I was in 1st rank, but after Google updated new algorithm bye bye

It really depends by the niche you're in and the competition you're facing. Isn't the same thing trying to rank for "stolen yogurt from my fridge" than for "hotels in new york". Monitor your rankings and your competition's link profile, and you'll know when to fire back.

I bought the most expensive packages that the threads had to offer. The results were good, I was not implying the results were cheap. I was just curious how often I should buy links, etc.

This isn't a question with a static answer. If you got good results, then you chose a good amount. This is all about testing. You need multiple sites to test on, and keep pushing it more and more until you see negative results. That same amount might be perfect for a different website though. That's how Googles algorithm works. It also depends how "real" the links look. If they are of the highest quality, there is no limit to how many you can buy.

Too much is when you have 10x more backlinks than your competitors if you have a new site.

There is no exact rule for that. That's why you should check your top 5 competitors for a specific keyword.

there really isnt "too much" its just some people assume that sending lots of links will get them a penalty, but thats just a myth. think of it, if it would work so easily then everyone would use it as negative SEO tactic.
just send tons of links to your competitors and they would be out of the picture. of course that doesnt work. many people tried it before for example thinking lots of adult/viagra links would destory a site, but it never worked. if any it just boosted their competitors lol. those who claim its bad are those who never tried it (or who sell manual link building services) and just repeat something they read somewhere. that being said, its just a matter of how many you need to compete in a certain niche. some keywords are harder so you will need more, others are easy and just a handful links will help to rank there.
