I have been looking into and experimenting with GSM SIM cards (Lyca Mobile currently) in a cheap LG Phoenix I bought on Craigslist for $15 as a means to verify gmail/IG accounts for child/parent account creation.

I know that there are people on this board that swap SIM cards out of phones to do exactly this, but I can't seem to figure out how to make this work without having to pay to top each line up with $10+.

What am I missing? Is there some kind of SIM card I can buy that comes with a $1-2 promo balance already on it that I can just pop in and use to receive SMS?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I never needed any balance on my Lyca cards to receive SMS.

I bought new/un-activated Lyca Mobile SIMS from Ebay here in the US and they did not receive SMS messages after I activated them. Not sure if there is a specific manufacturer here that will give me the results I want or what?

Maybe roaming cellular? You have to activate roaming features for get sms services
Try find in Alibaba for china cheap sim card

Call your telco and ask them to send you an SMS with the APN config info too.

Okay, then this is the difference:

Our SIMs have been unused, but already activated, with no balance on it. A few seconds after you put the SIM into your smartphone, you received a SMS with your phone number and the APN config.

I got the APN config and an sms with my new phone number when I called the activation number and entered my area code.

Ok, I had to call their number, enter my area code, and then they activated the SIM. Shortly after, I got a text from Lyca with my new # and the APN config data.

I would ask some local sellers if they have pre activated SIMs with no balance for you. I did the same.

The best part: Pre activated Lyca SIMs with no balance used to be available for free here, back in 2017. A kind of promotion.
