Another new guy... Ranking questions

Maybe this is a silly question from a newbie (which I clearly am).

I’ve started targeting low volume, low competition links and I was wondering how long it takes before I should start seeing them come up in search results (anywhere). My site is a Wordpress one and I’m using Yoast to “optimize” it the best I can.

I’m trying to do it organically without buying links, tweets, follows, etc.

I’m also using Page Rank (software) to look at my ranks on various words.

I know SEO is for the long term, but I was wondering if you could provide me some insight into how long until I should start showing up in the rankings?

Follow up: I have a really hard time understanding the Domain Rank/Authority metric. I don’t understand what it’s evaluating or how to improve upon it. I’m concerned that my low DA (16) might be counteracting my SEO work. My site is only <6mo old, and the backlink profile hasn’t grown organically like I was hoping. Any thoughts on how to pump this up? I understand there’s a relationship between DA and SEO efforts as far as what shows up in the search engine results.

Aint you building any links on your own? Because you most definetly need some links to rank the keywords. Unless its LSI/Sub keywords. And you rank your main one the others maybe start to rank on their own.

3 months at least to start getting your first organic clicks from Google.
Even if you're not buying backlinks or social proof, you should still do the link building yourself. It is crucial to success.
Also the content must be high quality with at least 1500+ words each article.

I have been able to acquire some naturally but I think there are only 14 domains linking to the site right now?

I’m trying to link build on my own, but so far every site I’ve reached out to hasn’t even responded. I’ve even tried to search for blogs in my niche that have broken outdated links but I’m 0/1 on that approach too.

I have a Facebook and Twitter page, but our growth has been largely at a standstill. We’ve even tried to narrow our focus even further to grasp more audience.

Is social score/shares a big enough factor that we should be putting the tiny amount of income we’re making toward this?

I am pleased to hear it’s not ranking bad for our length of site. I do worry that it’s hampering our ability to rank (especially on google).

Gotcha! Will work towards that, we’ve gotten a few google referrals here and there but nothing consistent (or frankly, logical).

Trying to target the best long-tail keywords I can find (using free tools... because, money...). I had a couple of those ranking in the top 100 for google, but they seem to have fallen off for some reason.

Depending on what keyword each article is after the competition could be harder than you think ?

What industry are you targeting? without mentioning keywords etc

We are a sports blog and we cover a few different leagues in particular. And in full disclosure, I would be foolish to insinuate that all are good/well targeted. I’ve made substantial strides (at least I think) in targeting long-tail keywords in the last week(s).

We’ve been using Yoast plugin since day one and they give error for keyword cannibalization so they are different, perhaps only slightly though (part 1, part 2, etc)

I put us into spyfu and we don’t come up. So I’m gathering that’s less than ideal

We’ve managed to get a lot of traffic from Reddit, especially for our Champions League posts... but so far we aren’t even generating enough revenue to cover hosting costs. I’m using google AdWords to target <10K search appearance words with “low” competition in hopes of converting some of those to routine hits... even if it’s only 0-10 a month... that’s 10x or more what we get now

Yeah, even for champs league or premier league you’re against bbc news and all other news channels which are ranking for everything to do with football.

Best bet would be social media. If your main keyword for which everything falls underneath is football then imo difficult niche.

We’ve started to move our focus to the English Championship and that has seemed to help us some. But, it sounds like I’m doing things (at least mostly) right... so I’ll keep on keeping on!

actually you should have start social sharing of your articles from day 1, then after 1 month start making various type of backlinks like web 2.0, comment backlinks guest post pbn links and others in low quantity for your top 5 main keywords which you think have low competition and there are not much high authority websites rank on those keywords, and you should continue social sharing, never leave it, but i think you have not done all that that's why you have not rank till now but start doing it from now, hope your keywords will rank because they are less competitive.
