In respect to my share from jan 2018 (https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/how-to-do-facebook-ads-in-2018-my-new-years-gift.1002589/) - instead of doing the same old garbage for 2019, I will be doing an ask me anything thread for facebook ads.

Some rules:

  • Don't ask me stupid questions about my specific campaigns/how much I make, as it's just childish/unproductive, but for your reference, as a team we have spent around ~$5m this year on fb ads (although november/december have been tough since we have been restructuring)
  • Don't ask me questions like "bro how do I run bh and make 20000000% ROI in 2019" - if I knew, I wouldn't share anyway
  • I'd prefer not to have my time wasted, so please be concise with your questions
  • Please refrain from pming me with your questions, as it's unfair on the rest, instead, just write the question here
  • Don't ask me about payment solutions/account supply, we have our own internal solution in house, and I'm not looking to sell/self-promote.
  • Please check the thread before asking the question, as your question may have already been answered

Ask away :)

You pretty much ruled out every question I had.

10/10 Would open a AMA and rule out all questions.

How do I run Facebook ads for a site Monetized with adsense to make 2000000% ROI

Give me your active fb ads account.

You pretty much ruled out every question I had.

10/10 Would open a AMA and rule out all questions.

Real mature!

I'm offering valuable advice/time - these type of questions are useless to you, and useless to me, which is why I ruled them out.

The reason I say this is if you are still stuck at getting an ads account - you are fucked.
If you are still stuck at getting a payment solution - you are fucked.
If you need someone to give you a BH campaign - you are fucked.

Instead, I am happy to give any technical help, or talk about what's going to be trending, or general help with ads strategy, which is far more valuable than hand-holding.

I would've killed to have someone to give me technical help when I first started fb ads, so trolls refrain from posting here, you are only screwing this up for others too!

Are promoting a video or photo better? I sell web hosting.

How do you define your target market? And how many attempts does it typically take to find a great ad matched with an ideal target market?

Are promoting a video or photo better? I sell web hosting.

Video is always best as you have more adspace - it's one of facebook's key weapons.

As an extension, the best way to build a solid video ad is to demonstrate:

- What your product is and does
- And what is the effect of the product.

An example:

"Our web hosting has one of the fastest response times in the industry.
End result? Destroy your competition with higher google rankings. "

And the video could be the website being setup super fast and google rankings increasing

^^ It's a bit aggressive, but I'm assuming you're targeting a cold audience and you'll need to be aggressive to get them to convert.

As a golden nugget: if you are serious about running ads for your web hosting - build an LLA (lookalike audience) from the customer list you currently have, it'll make your audience more targeted.

Are you building your audience from pixel and or fan pages or are you running naked campaigns i.e from no data?

When setting your ad considering your spend over 12 months are you going broad or very specific IF specific what sort of numbers do you run an advert to 100k? 20k audience or do you not bother about that?

How many advert versions do you run and what if any % of that do you end up with at the end from edited versions?

Have you seen a better conversion with video ads this last quarter? We have, I've also noticed that video ads are cheaper...

Are you letting your adverts run at specific times or do they run 24/7?

What are your adverts running for i.e its goal - just give a broad reply, clicks, likes, emails, sales etc from that what sort of return are you seeing from each converted click.

Do any of your adverts run for 12 months or a set time frame? Do you run seasonal promotion ads alongside?

How do you define your target market? And how many attempts does it typically take to find a great ad matched with an ideal target market?

Defining the target market is hugely dependent on these factors:

- GEO Culture (are they religious, are they traditional, are they liberal etc)
- Demand
- Supply (can my product reach the audience)

However - if your landing page is well written and well targeted, facebook's AI is clever enough to send you the right audience without having to figure out the audience for yourself. The best approach I have found is to go broad and then narrow down as you collect more data.

This is more like it!

Are you building your audience from pixel and or fan pages or are you running naked campaigns i.e from no data?

A: Never from fan pages, only from the pixel, but yeah the vast majority of our campaigns are "naked" due to the nature of BH. Our whitehat run with LLA's @ 3%

When setting your ad considering your spend over 12 months are you going broad or very specific IF specific what sort of numbers do you run an advert to 100k? 20k audience or do you not bother about that?

A: The issue is , we operate across a wide range of verticals, and each vertical requires a specific strategy, so this is difficult to answer. Generally speaking the audience saturation point is at around 20% of the total audience. So if your audience is around 2m, after 400k reach, you'll start to see your ad to tank. Ofcourse, this hugely varies on how targeted it is.

How many advert versions do you run and what if any % of that do you end up with at the end from edited versions?

A: To test a new advert, we will run 3 ads inside each adset, and 3 different adsets @ $30/daily spend per adset. This actually aids Facebook in optimisation and really like this strategy. We generally end up with 1-2 decent ads per 10 ads.

(caveat to this: this strategy is generally for WH campaigns, our BH strategy is a little different)

Have you seen a better conversion with video ads this last quarter? We have, I've also noticed that video ads are cheaper...

A: Video ads definitely give better quality audience, but again it really varies based on your vertical. In some instances our RHS ads are crushing still.

Are you letting your adverts run at specific times or do they run 24/7?

A: Some of our campaigns are time scheduled due to call centers.

What are your adverts running for i.e its goal - just give a broad reply, clicks, likes, emails, sales etc from that what sort of return are you seeing from each converted click.

A: Well, we operate across 5 different Niches/verticals, so it's really difficult to give a ballpark figure, but september-dec has definitely been tougher this year than last year. We generally only run conversion campaigns for sales, and our return is around 70% on average (we have campaigns that do 600%, and then we also have "loss leaders" i.e. negative campaigns, this is the nature of our business as we operate on high volumes)

Do any of your adverts run for 12 months or a set time frame? Do you run seasonal promotion ads alongside?

A: I'm yet to see the same ad work on the same ad account for 12 months consistently (on and off yes, but not every day for 12 months). We don't do seasonal shit, and it's down to internal strategy; I simply don't want my team bidding against brands. We've done event specific campaigns, but not seasonal.

Is there a way to promote health products which are banned but aren’t dangerous ?

Nothing illegal , but it still falls under the category of illegal so it can’t be directly advertised.

This thread is gold and salute to OP for taking time to answer the questions.
First few posts already full with nonsense.
Facebook ads are one hell of an investment and headache, list your questions or move on.
Will keep my eye on this, maybe i can up my game with a thing or two.

Hey,i'd like to thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Im not sure if this is a stupid question, but i always seem to struggle a bit with this one:

What do you look at in order to determine whether to kill an ad or not? Run for a specific amount of time and see a return or not? Or something else?

Q: Its viable to make your own accounts and credit cards?

Q 2: What is the minimun budget for someone who wants to start with FB Ads? With 0 experience with the platform

Thank you :)

How to scale a campaign while keeping the same cpc?

I've been struggling with this. As soon as I try scaling that particular campaign my cpc gets increased by 4x. I know scaling comes with higher cpc but the daily budget is pennies I'll be fucked when I increase the budget to xxx$/day

In, short how do you go about scaling link click campaigns? where the goal is getting traffic, not conversion.

Hey man, great to see you are doing an ama. I am genuinely looking into the alternative methods to traffic and I can spend money on it. However, every time I have tried fb ads I have failed, may be due to the fact that I didn't do any research on it.

My question is a n00b question. Can you share me a method using which I can get some good roi?

For an example let's say I have an app which does "reverse phone number lookup" for a particular country. How would you go about it? Let's say that my site doesn't rank anywhere.... And I am gonna funnel it to a clickbank affiliate site. Not to mention that this may not be allowed by fb in reality. Sorry if this sounds too dumb.

Btw, this isn't my niche (anymore. It used to be 5 yrs back lol). Just want to see how people go about fb ads in general.

hey kasher, thanks for taking the time!

1. How do you deal with the inconsistency when launching the same ads on different accounts?
Basically you know that from prior testing you have a winning ad creative (and funnel) but the same creative is performing poorly on a new account.
I usually launch the conversion campaign with an inital budget of 50-100$ and let it run for a couple of days before creating LLA's to scale.

If the conversion campaign isn't generating a positive ROI, I like to relaunch the adset (with 4 images) to tap into a new audience. Most of the time I do however see the same performance, even with relaunching the adset.
Is relaunching adsets the best approach?

2. Dealing with Ad fatigue.
I noticed that ad creatives are experiencing a shorter lifetime and FB artifically puts a tax on creatives that have been running for too long.

What's your opinion on using "dynamic creatives" with a couple of proven images to let FB rotate them and fighting early fatigue?
Or do you still recommend the standard method of launching 4 same ads in an adset, disabling the 3 worser performing ads and switching the ad creative as soons as fatigue starts to kick in?

First thanks for the reply. I've got some follow ups, based on your reply I'll number them to make it easier than highlighting if you have time to reply!

A: Never from fan pages, only from the pixel, but yeah the vast majority of our campaigns are "naked" due to the nature of BH. Our whitehat run with LLA's @ 3%

1. So do you not use fan page data is the because:

- your fan pages are not yours so can't guarantee the quality of the page
- you built up the page with bought fans?

Would you run from the fan page if you built up your audience with 'like' ads? So we run a highly targetted ads to gather new fans on the page as a result we get a fairly dynamic fan page with a good interaction rate. Our ads we run from fan page and pixel return about the same kind of engagment.

2. Ah that's interesting we run the same split but over 4 adsets with 3 in each. Do you test again with variations on the best performing ad in that set or just run with it?

A: Well, we operate across 5 different Niches/verticals, so it's really difficult to give a ballpark figure, but september-dec has definitely been tougher this year than last year. We generally only run conversion campaigns for sales, and our return is around 70% on average (we have campaigns that do 600%, and then we also have "loss leaders" i.e. negative campaigns, this is the nature of our business as we operate on high volumes)

3. If it helps this last quarter has tanked as well for us we are down 63% on last year. I think it's down to a number of factors most things seem to be down. We have one consistent ad for building the brand and the rest goes towards sales.

4. Thanks for that, we do a fair bit of seasonal which is down to the product rather than the time of year i.e Christmas what had taken us a while to figure out is to run our seasonal about 8 weeks before the actual season running during has always tanked. Seems obvious but with our product as it was mostly down to targetting users who typically leave things to last minute we never had any luck converting them but the 'early bird' consumer performed much better now our seasonal stuff runs before and never during..

Thanks for taking the time and the replies. Interesting insight :)
