MacKeeper software

I've been thinking of purchasing MacKeeper for my MacBook for quite some time now. My laptop is new, and I want to keep using it for a long time. One of the main reasons why I want to purchase the software is because it allows you to trace your laptop if it gets stolen. I live in Eastern Europe and these things happen quite often, especially when I'm in my university's dorms.

I'm aware that the MacBook has an integrated Find My Mac function, but that only works if you have an iPhone - well, I'm a Samsung user, so that doesn't help.

Now the big problem is that after doing some broad research on the MacKeeper software I was shocked by the reviews. Half of the people are saying that MacKeeper is a virus that installed on their laptop without their consent. The other half explains how to get rid of MacKeeper from your Mac ( which apparently is a lot harder than any other application on MacOS)

Has anyone of you guys have any experience with the said MacKeeper software?
If not, do you know any alternatives to it which can help protect my laptop's data, performance and of course theft protection?

Yes, some of my friends do have an iPhone, but I don't think that would work as my MacBook is registered under my Apple ID and their iPhone is registered under their Apple ID.

I would expect that many of those reviews about it being installed as a virus are those that got hit with a mediafire, etc pop up and installed it... that is one of the pop ups you get when you download from file sharing sites.

I assumed so. That's why I decided to open a thread and ask here rather than blindly trust reviews. Some of them were saying that there's the legit MacKeeper software and then there's some freeware MacKeeper software which is the one causing the problems. I'll be honest - I got confused.

P.S. Reviews start from early 2012 and are until now.

Yes, some of my friends do have an iPhone, but I don't think that would work as my MacBook is registered under my Apple ID and their iPhone is registered under their Apple ID.

As far as i know, you only need Apple ID (the thing you registered with) and password of your Apple ID, then you can login and lookup your phone/mac/ipad and so on...

Yep, you just need Apple ID email and password. Just checked.
