Just a theoretical question:suspicious:

How deep in shit could you get legally, if you were to register a punycode variant of an established news site domain, copy their site layout completely and then write some articles on the site that promote CPA links?

Go for it - you won't have any real issues at all.

You might get a toothless roar from the site you copy telling you they are going to bite you but they have no teeth and no real desire to do anything other than make noise.

That idea can really work. I agree with the previous user that this website couldn't do anything to you and you will save your time and start earning money from it.
Good luck!

Though, if you were to actually get sued by the site for doing this, they would probably completely destroy your anus in court... Copyright infringment, damage to the brand, maybe even fraud? But are there any prior cases of this happening?

They won't do anything other than send you a C&D if they even do that.

I could list a bunch of companies that 99% of those on this site have heard of who I impersonated to make money off their branding and trademarks and the worst thing that happened was a C&D letter.

Some of them I abused more than once and got more than one C&D from their legal departments.

Register the fake domain through Njal.la (A privacy-aware domain registration service by The Pirate Bay co-founder). Also, Njalla doesn't give a shit about copyright claims. Just look at their response to the fucking New York Times!! [njal.la/blog/about-those-threats]

Host the site with a privacy-centric hosting service and mask your server IP via Cloudflare. Now you are pretty much safe from those C&D.
