Just because they are new to BHW does not mean they do not know what they are talking about. They are both correct, yes they can help if done properly as part of a rounded link building campaign and some are no follow, depending on the site you are commenting on and the service they use for comments.
Theres your answer but it is the same as what you were already given. I found this 2018 link building guide via the search box... and reading your last reply, your attitude sucks. Grow up.

Balance do follow and no follow links. A lot of no follow links affects your link profile. Make good comments to receive some traffic.

In fact, I totally agree that members here who are new can actually offer solid advice. However the difference is, I don't KNOW that they're someone who can speak on this subject, and this is why I'm hesitant in taking advice from new members here. If you feel that is wrong on my part, then you're entitled to your opinion, and likewise, so am I.
However, if you look at what the first two posters said, one advising in favour of spam, and the other labelled all blog comments as no-follow. This is the kind of crap that other people will read and possibly believe.
This proves you don't know what you're talking about either. The fact that you agree with them is a joke. If you wanna associate your money site with pharma and adult infested pages, be my guest.
My attitude was actually too soft. Rather, BHW should moderate posts from new members due to the potential of them spewing nonsense just to get their post count up. And like I said, other people reading these threads who sincerely wanna learn SEO could be fooled by such terrible advice.

Errrm, at no stage did you explain the blunders they made in their post, so the implication to anyone would be that you agreed with their posts in general, thereby adding fuel to the fire.

Of course, it can work in some niches. I will say that first focus should be on finding a list of good blogs getting huge traffic and then you should think of conversion. May be 60:40 weightage in these two aspects.

Blog comments still work, but cover a range that most usually don't pay attention to. Most spend their time on the low hanging fruit of auto-approved do-follow urls, whether those pages are authoritative, relevant or not. Then they wonder why the same page a bit later has 500+ OBL, is filled up with spam, while their comment has rolled off the page with any metrics juice.
The best pages are relevant, good metrics, may require approval, and often have a limited period when comments are open. Meaning once that period is over, the outbound links stop growing on that page. If you do a search with a footprint that includes "comments are closed" and you'll find plenty of sites where placing a timely, well written comment will lead to a strong quality link that isn't later ruined by comment spam.
