Translating existing niche sites to another language

Hey guys, I recently had this idea. I'm not from an English speaking country (Germany) however my English is quite good. Although lots of Germans speak English, there's still a huge share of people in Germany, Switzerland and Austria who don't know English that well and do all their Internet research in German.
Now my idea is to take large niche sites that are in English, translate them to German and build my own replica of it (as long as there doesn't exist a similar website in German). Would this work/ has anyone ever done this?
This could also work for other languages which a large audience, such as French or Spanish.

People do this all the time. Translating and publishing. So, it's not a new thing.
You can do it, everyone can. The person would not have to be just skilled as a translator but also in the niche you'd start a website for.

Why would you need knowledge of the niche if you just translate an existing niche site with all the content already published?

I thought about this aswell in the past but never did any deeper research on it.

If you really want to do it properly and if you're actually serious about it, you will need much more time as a translator if you don't know anything or a little about the niche you're translating about. I believe it's harder than it seems.

I do agree. The websites you will be translating for did not get their audience, because they had instant content. They build it over time. Unless you have money for PPC, then you can try cloning and just checking out if it would work via simple PPC. If it does, build it organically with patience. Backlinking and SEO.
