Are machines and humans really different?

I was thinking about this stuff some more recently. Not specifically relation to this thread, was just thinking about it anyway.

I was thinking of artificial intelligence and machines taking over in a completely different way -

There have been quite a few scenarios recently where I have been speaking to real people about an issue and they've had absolutely no power to override the computer and fix the problem.

The first scenario was with paypal - they had an incorrect note of my business name, but regardless of how far up the chain they escalated this issue they were not able to get the name removed. It wasn't that they had any issue with what I was requesting - I had sent in proof of business name and they had agreed to my request, but they were physically not able to change it.

The second scenario was with a courier company - I had ordered some computer parts on next day delivery and the parts had got to the local depot the day after ordering at about 5am (on time) but had not gone out with that days delivery so they were going to be a day late. The depot is 10 minutes from where I live so I called them to say I had arranged it for next day delivery specifically because I was going to be out for the rest of the week and could I pick the package up from the depot myself? The help desk were unable to help and said the only way I could collect it myself would be if I left it go out for delivery as planned, wait until it failed and went back to the depot again, and then to call and arrange to collect it myself.

These two situations got me thinking - although its not the fancy version of AI taking over where robots start thinking for themselves, it is a boring version of this in so much as we already have AI and computer systems that we have no control over. As this develops further it feels like robots will effectively be in control simply because we have programmed such robust systems that we cannot alter them ourselves.

And keeping in mind we have absolutely no idea what consciousness or awareness actually is, what if those things actually grow out of this environment that we are creating? Then we'll all be truly fucked.

I like to see machines more in the industries and factories but their usage must be within a limit. You just can't discard the usage of humans. Nothing can replace the human instincts. Besides if you replace all the humans in factories. it will create an issue of unemployment.

I don't think it willbe fair to compare both of them. They both have their merits and demerits. The human mind lacks the ability to crack complex situations in an instant whereas the machines lack the instincts which the human body is capable of making in extreme conditions.

These days many speak that robots are going to become smarter than humans in the near future, but I cannot even imagine something like that. I think the machines will never reach the level of human capacities. We have been making them, and our own capacities are limited, so they can only borrow a part of our capacities because we can only give what we have. They learn from us, we teach them, and a pupil has never been smarter than a teacher.

We'll just have to see if that's true. I am confident there will be a way(maybe I am overly optimistic). Though, we don't even know how our body and conscience work exactly atm, haha!

Very interesting question indeed. Humans tend to think they are lead by their conscious mind, but are more lead by the subconscious that makes up 95% of the brain. When a baby is first born, it is not conscious. Therefore the brain is only subconscious and all of the experiences that the baby is subject to form the subconscious and then consciousness is then realized from the subconscious at a certain age. So whatever is put into the subconscious mind during the child's upbringing one could look at as essentially a "program." This would explain why children can learn multiple languages at a time while adults struggle just learning one outside of their native tongue. As far as the main difference between man and robot I believe the key difference is the fact that humans have a brain with immense complexity. Because of the complexity of the brain we can form relationships, complex emotions and also are highly sociable in nature. Even though robots are capable of complex operations and processes, they will never surpass the complexity/advancement of a human brain due to their mechanical nature.

Who said about mechanical nature? People can clone animals for quite a long time and can make some organs from the cells. Can't make complex organs, like brain now, but this is only the matter of time. And then creation of bigger and smarter brain won't be a problem. Or to copy it's structure to the other, more sutable existance. But there is long way ahead. Now what humans call AI now is very far from what humans think AI is.

In theory, not really. You could theoretically model a neural network to resemble a human brain. Where each axon is a weight lol

I recently watched a movie called Alita - Battle Angel. And thats when i realized what it will feel like to have human like AI robots live with us. I think its perfectly possible for them to be a part of our society at some time in the far future.

For now, AI is just reinforcement learning and machine learning is using statistics to get good results. Its really useful for us as marketers.

Great Question, we are machines but for machines will never be human. Personally I think we will evolve into a combination of both - or how the hell we ever going tot get out of this solar system.
