I made this change to my PC after learning of this little trick a few weeks ago. It has tremendously improved the overall performance of my computer. Essentially, with this method, you'll be requiring your Windows operating system to do less work/processing and in return will have a less-taxed CPU (meaning improved performance).

This works for Windows© 7, 8, 8.1, and 10.

In only 2 minutes you too can speed-up your PC by:
  • First, open the windows search box (hit the Windows key on your keyboard).
  • Second, in the search box, enter "services.msc" (without quotes) and press "Enter".
  • Third, scroll down until you find a process named "Windows Search".
  • Fourth, you'll want to "right" click on the process and select "Properties".
  • Next, where it says "Startup type", change to "Disabled" and click "Apply".
  • Finally, restart your computer and enjoy the improved speeds! :)

Also, an extra tip that will really help those that don't know is if you select "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" there will be a "Startup" tab that will allow you to manage which programs automatically startup with Windows (as well as those that don't). This is a good place for you to disable "automatic startup" on unnecessary programs that you don't need running on boot (startup).

Let me know how the results are for you when you make the change! :)

easy method

  1. In Windows Explorer :
  2. Open Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features on or off.
  3. Check 'Windows Search' to get it back. To disable Windows Search, uncheck the option. Click OK and for Windows to configure the settings. Restart your computer.

yeah... i have always had trouble with search processes.. i see they take a lot of CPU and RAM most of the times, gonna do this and i'll tell you.

thanks, cheers! :)

edit: you should tell people to press Windows button and letter S instead because that will open search bar on every system i believe.

Thank you for the rewriting my post.

The funny thing is I did this last night and found out about it yesterday. Didn't even read this thread. Weird.

It's already disabled for me even though I didn't change it!

Also, another great little trick to increasing speed is by increasing your virtual ram. This change will allow your computer to use a portion of the hard drive space to be used as memory (allowing you to do "more" at once on your PC).
