I think it depends on what country you are in, but if you use a proxy or VPN, you should be relatively save.

Try to not seed to much, just download and delete it.. It's not ok for other seed'ers but it more safe for you...

Myself, I'm just downloading torrents for movies I actually own--that's not illegal, seeding is though. I want to digitize my collection, and torrents are easier than ripping everything. I went with a seedbox, and am having success. It'll be a bit safer with a private tracker, but getting an invite without paying for it, is the trick.

Like babasss said, avoid seeding too much. When you finished downloading pirated software make sure to turn it off, as long as you are careful you should be safe but if you still are worried a VPN or private tracker would be your best options.
