How to use Popunders in 2018 and beyond.

Especially now that we have retargeting, stuff like propeller ads and other popunder traffic is a goldmine..

Propeller ads in 2018 shouldn't be used with the goal of getting conversions as that's wishful thinking. Firstly it's the most aggressive type of interruption marketing. It's akin to trying to seduce a woman that doesn't know you by jumping in front of her, screaming "SURPRISE", then continuously poking her hoping that she'll fall in love with you..

You come off as a creep, and extremely annoying. Not saying popunder traffic doesn't convert, as it does for some people. But this is only after they have tested a lot and identified sites that convert and is congruent with their offer..

An example of a site which has popunders that convert is flaticon.com. This site offers free graphic design icon assets. And each time an icon is about to be downloaded, a popunder leading to a highly contextual keyword triggered Shutterstock page opens. So if someone searched for football helmet icons, the free site has a limited amount of icons, but the popunder opens up shutterstock with a wider range and possibly more professional icons. Well they're doing affiliate to shutterstock which I don't think is the best offer to explain this, but at least it is congruent and well timed pop.

Why does this work?

Well this is a private popunder script so the site owner chooses which URL to pop, so it's not the same as running popunder campaigns on propeller ads where the publisher can't choose which url to pop as that's decided by the network's algorithm.

The popunder only opens when someone downloads an icon. If someone downloads a free icon, they are likely to buy some graphic design assets as they're most likely needing a lot of assets.

Also compared to popunder publisher sites which are mostly adult, hack or blackhat stuff, there aren't a million popunders popping at every click which is annoying and people are blind to. Like if you spend $300 which I guess shows your popunder to hundreds of thousands of people and you have 0 conversions, then something must be wrong with the whole system..

What should popunders be used for?

Traffic to retarget. Extremely cheap AF traffic. I haven't used much platforms, but most of them offer a lot of targeting options.

In terms of targeting options, I probably won't bother with topic or niche, but focus on device and location targeting buying traffic from porn sites. The reason for porn sites is most people don't use vpns or proxies for porn, compared to other sites you'd find on pop networks like streaming, movies etc and also most people use mobile devices, so the chance of getting bots or adblock is almost impossible I guess. Also everyone watches porn, so traffic is pretty much unlimited.
Target by location to retarget with location specific offers and device for the same.

Example scenario. I have an iphone related ecom site. I just simply go on plugrush or trafficjunky, target people using iPhone 5 on blah blah network in california and buy 100,000 visitors for £50 or something. Obviously the more variables, the less potential traffic. I don't send them to my store but just a random site with my retargeting pixel.

Now run a retargeting ad with my offer + calling out the location and you have a formula for conversions. That's 100,000 potential customers acquired for extremely cheap.

many platforms have many targeting options like : geos , device, carrier, language, country and many others. Some popunder networks have conversions tracking or you can use Voluum or something like this

Try an adult network like trafficjunky or plugrush and target mobile. Less chance of bots & vpns..

I just meant in the retargeting ad copy, call out (mention) the location you targeted in the popunder for a probability of boosting conversions, for example "50% OFF iPhone chargers for Apple users in Washington". If you target multiple locations, then use the appropriate location in the ad copy..

The reason I chose adult networks like trafficjunky + using retargeting is because:

*I mostly noticed propeller ads on movie streaming, illegal downloads etc & most people use a vpns or proxies. And they are the worst experience ever due to publishers usually popping like 5 ads which all get closed. And I'm not sure if there's frequency capping so those 5 pips could be your site.

*Pornhub uses trafficjunky, and the pop under ads are the most minimally intrusive on mobile. Also since from my experience, sites with propeller ads pop multiple pop ups at once, the likelihood of all them being closed is high. The site is almost unusable and the audience is pissed off and just want to get their movie/download. I've seen movie streaming sites that make you click the play button 5 times with a pop ad each time. In those scenarios, I don't even let the pop window load for up to 1 second. It gets closed instantly. Like people would think SO MUCH SPAM..

*It's not the same as trafficjunky on pornhub which has only 1 pop under per session on mobile. And what makes this pop good is that it's usually not noticed until after the video finishes lol, and it's usually another adult related site (congruent), or sometimes I see some betting casino ads..

*I chose to retarget only because PA gives $100 free credit which I want to make use of + I don't want my main eCom site associated with the adult/pop campaign by my viewers. Like I don't want my audience to see my pop site, then be retargeted with an ad to the same site later. The pop content is different from the eCom site content (different domain etc). More content marketing like native ad style, warming up the audience. Or it can be a giveaway which requires a social share to get viral retargetable traffic, have display ads etc..

*I just wanted to have a stealth campaign. I'd only directly show my eCommerce site on the popunder if I know the destination site and how it's pop under experience is, such as with the flaticon example..

I stated my reason in the original post which is basically Trojan horse stealth shit. I'm not popping my eCommerce, but instead my cookie site as I don't want my 'money site' associated with the popunder. Any retargeted visitor will have 0% clue..

If you say it's a waste of money, then tell that to everyone doing content marketing because YES, people do paid content marketing to get cheaper traffic to retarget, which back in the day was not much retargeting in the mainstream but email list subscriptions which you try to sell to in the future. Long term shit..

Why am I not using city/location targeting? I guess you mean on Facebook? Well this is location targeting using popunder networks (mainly porn sites which I suggested above and gave my reasons)..

Difference between the two is that they are for totally different purposes.

Your model usually deals with Facebook niche targeting/ keyword targeting. With your model, you are sending paid traffic direct to product, then retargeting the same/similar products. Conventional shit. How much would it cost to acquire 100,000 visitors if you have a 0.10 cpc which is pretty low?

My model deals with device/location/carrier targeting etc. I'm using this like a branding campaign. Shooting wide and aiming to pluck something out. I'm not expecting to go into deep niches and target 69 year old grandmothers in Massachusetts who like buzzfeed food and border collies. My model works best with the targeting methods available which is why I mentioned an iPhone accessory eCommerce store. It also works with location specific campaigns. Contrastingly, acquiring 100,000 visitors would cost like £5 of my own, which I'll retarget using PA free credit..

With my model, I'm popping under some subliminal shit which is related to my niche, while my audience are in primal mode, ferociously fapping. When my £5 worth of 100,000 iPhone 8 users from Los Angeles finish slapping their sticks to women with a hairy bush, I then retarget them with an ad saying "Come try out the best organic smoothies in LA'..
