I normally use keyword planner to ascertain the competition and the price for an adwords campaign. It's a good enough indicator

Bid price can tell you how "commercial" the keyword is. If there's shittons of campaigns targeting that keyword, you can be sure there's shittons of SEOs targeting it as well. Quite simple and idiot proof technique actually.
