I was under the impression that backlinks don't matter if you try and rank in youtube search and that they only matter for Google?

Backlinks do not matter in the Youtube Search Engine, they can help you rank in the Google Search Engine but backlinks will not help you rank in the Youtube Search Engine. The best way to rank a Youtube Video is to have a good quality video with high retention views and a lot of engagement (ie: likes and comments) - So the best whitehat thing you can do is to create a high quality video (which is actually entertaining to watch) and interact with your audience (respond to their comments, do giveaways, ask questions etc.)
