Can Extra Content Dilute Keyword Rank

Let's say that I write a 2,000-word article.
1,000 words about blue widgets, and 1,000 words about red widgets.
The article goes on to page 1 of Google for both of the search terms, blue widgets, and red widgets.

I then add another thousand words about green widgets, and then another thousand words about yellow widgets.

Is the articles power to rank for blue and red widgets now diminished as the keyword density is halved?

The same question applies to top 10 articles.

If the article ranks for a specific product in the top 10, such as a specific model of Nike shoes ranked at number 5, then I add ten more reviews of different shoes to that article, is it likely to affect the ranking for Nike xxx?

I would not do that.

I would add different articles about the different colored widgets, put them on their own page/post and rank them all for their specific colored widget.

Why not dominate Google in the widget category with a bunch of different pages as opposed to just one that is confusing to your reader as well as to Google?

One more vote for separate articles. You can dominate the first page. Also, internal linking between these pages could be an additional benefit.

I agree with you both totally in principle, but the problem that I have is that I have a page which is "best x under $50"

I did a top 5, and the page immediately started to rank for one of the products.

I monetized the page with an Amazon bestseller plugin, that naturally changes as products do.

Now, the top 5 being displayed by the bestseller plugin are different to the 5 that I have reviewed.

So I've started writing reviews for the current 5 and adding them to the page with the old 5.

At this rate, the page could turn in to a top 50, which I have no problem with, but using this format, how can I get the products on to different pages to help in the way that you have mentioned?

How about a simple page 2, with 5 products, and page 3 etc, all linking to each other?

This is the way to go IMO.

To answer your original question:

If you have blue/green/black etc widgets on a single page, it might suffer for a single blue widget keyword because the article is not 100% on topic. A competitor's article which is focused 100% on blue widget could easily outrank you. Also as you might have ssupected, your keyword density for blue widget might get diluted. You might want to increase your density for the keyword but you risk an over optimization penalty.

I dont think so. if the other shoes are related to the Nike one, then there shouldn't be any problems. But i will put them in their own pages.

That way doesn't allow me to do top 5 lists though.

I thought about this before and here's the thing.

Lets say your content is structured in this way;

Red Widget
Green Widget
Blue Widget
Brown Widget

Now when you rank for red widget, great. People can visit your site and see the red widget part immediately. If you rank for blue widget, the user will see red widget right at the top and bounce immediately, get confused by it or can't find blue widget part.
