How do profile pics affect your perception of someone?

I notice I form a conception of a user's personality and background based on their profile picture, as well as their posts.

Any (intelligent) thoughts on this?

If people choose to use actual photographs at least use your own if you are going to pretend to be a female. I find it quite sad when people come along with an interesting username, pretend to be this 19 year old model / cam girl and they're really a guy sat at their parents in the bedroom.

For me its just easier to ID people by a unique avatar than an username. I don't think too hard about any underlying meaning.

I never actually thought about it, but now that you mention it, I think I do that too. And it's always easier to remember a user by their profile photo - I rarely pay attention to the username. But, I wouldn't go as far as to say that I form a detailed opinion about their personality. A photo is sometimes just a photo.

I hope my pic doesn't say too much about me.

I just see it as something more memorable than a username, when I read somebodies post with no pic and then at a later time I see another post of theirs, there is a good chance I won't even realise it's the same person.

Yeah, a member's avatar does play a part in the way I perceive them. For example:

• Jr. VIPs using gender symbol avatars make me suspicious. You know, like they're just here to cause trouble on the forum.
• I think people who use profile pictures of themselves (i.e., BTB and I, but mostly BTB since you can see more of his face) are ballsy.
• @ScribScribScrib's avatar from December made me think he was pompous, yet tasteful.
• I find self-promotional avatars to be disingenuous.
• @WilhelmScream's avatar makes me think she's a cool scene girl.
• @Billy Batts' avatar reminds me a lot of a client/friend of mine who passed away last year (I've told him this before, but they even sort of have the same name).
• Default avatars annoy me and I tend to dislike users who use them, especially this monstrosity:
  
• Some members use avatars that are just "them", like @Neon and @Asif WILSON Khan. I mean, when I think of them, those avatars come to mind.
