Recently I did experience installing multiple Linux distribution on cheap(12$/Yr) 128/MB VPS that uses KVM virtualization (which allows you can install an OS you want) ,
as you you cant do that much with 128/MB if you want to install Windows(I know you most have windows on the cloud servers for bot) , so I give try with a Linux disruption called SliTaz and it boot with no issue I get in the GUI (remotely using VNC ) and it was running fast as it's on my PC ,
Anyway since its very small distribute(~50MB) it's didn't recognize the network card so th Internet inside the VPS were not working , (lather I discovered how get it work) .
So I decide to go for Debian 9 (I download it full DVD iso) and it recognize the network immediately and was able to install latest packages (e.g I was need to test VLC 3.0 and it's works)
Like most of you I know Linux since long time I first time I really tried in 2009 and it was really nightmare for regular Windows user(nothing were working ) ,
bit too week ago I decide to give it try with command line only CentOS install on my laptop using VirtualBox , making that command line OS work were difficult but I get the network card working and I discovered many hidden feature that quite useful for any programmer like environment variable and the ability to customize the kernel make your own distribution and even create portable app (e.g I jut copy nano Editor bin file to /usr/bin ) .
Honest I'm person who's hate command line but when I get use to it i realize the wisdom why Linux developers never give up on it , simply it's makes automatic staff a lot easier ,
and now lets come to business advantage either you have big or small budget Linux is good for you ,
At least you wont find any cheap VPS that cost you as low as 4$ a year (128MB/NAT VPS) for windows ( the cheapest one I found was >10$/Month ) ,
let come to the size
This is my VPS after full install Debian 9 with full update + I have VLC and FFmpeg installed too.
Windows 7 as I remember uses ~20GB after fresh install
Even for desktop I had my PC that didn't boot on windows BSD caused by H.D.D physical failure I install Elementary Linux without single error message .
I didn't try Wine or Mono ( to test windows app yet ) but I guess if it able to run some Win app that you most needed .
Last I didn't encourage you to switch to Linux , because even my self I still discovering it , but I want to open your eye on something hidden on many people which how much powerful Linux are , I call it real industrial OS and all version of Windows Servers comes close to it , this thing solid as rock but the problem with us we can't get to use it .
