Average starting salary for surgical residents is right at around $50k. Doesn't seem like much, especially after eight years of schooling, but I can't describe how good it felt when her income literally swayed $100k (from -$50k to +$50k). That usually goes up a grand or two for the five years of surgical residency.

So by the end you will make $60k per year as a chief resident. It's all grunt work and preparation, though. Then two years of fellowship if you want to specialize. So that is another two years at around $65k or $70k per year. If she was single, her loan payments would be income based, so they would likely cap at around $400 per month for this time frame. Ours is still income based, but we make solid bank in our 20's, so we pay a lot more than the monthly estimate. My stretch goal is to have her loans completely paid off by the time she exits fellowship. We are on track for that without making any real dent in our upper-middle lifestyle, because we make $150k to $200k per year already, but we live like we make half that.

Once she exits fellowship, that income will skyrocket, and hers will likely go from $70k per year to $330k per year starting as a specialized trauma surgeon. After five years that will likely go to $400k per year (more probably due to inflation). She would like to retire at age 50, so that would give her 18 total years of practice. She will likely be making over $500k by the time she is ready to retire.

But to be in medicine you need the passion for saving lives. She has some absolutely incredible stories, ones that make Grey's Anatomy seem tame. Things that I definitely could never ever ever do. But I'm in the best position. I've got a business degree and a solid side gig, and I married a doctor and did so early. I invested in the long term. Like the super long term. Then things clicked and took off. Now I steadily make six figures a year from IM alone, have a solid career in a great and growing field at a wonderful company, and life is great.

But get a goddamn job, kid. I highly recommend one in customer service. I did this for several years, between a mini golf course, Sonic Drive-In, Subway, and huge casino. I learned how to deal with people, and it has gotten me far in life. I started when I was 14, and have been working ever since. You need the customer service experience from the employee end. You clearly have zero clue how to handle and talk with people having opinions that don't align with your ideals. In the offline world, people such as yourself are very easy to spot.
