Hip-Hop Niche

Hey everyone,

I've done some research and there is not a whole lot of information out there on people trying to build an authority network around the hip-hop niche. In this thread I am posting some of my own ideas & research, as well as hoping to create a hub for others interested in this niche to post their own information. As people post quality information in the thread, or correct anything I have below, I will update the thread so it can be used as a resource for those trying to break into this niche.

Account Topics​

So far, I've seen that hip-hop pages primarily consist of the following sub-sets;

Blogs & News:
Blogs are a fairly general topic, and they can range, but I am primarily talking about accounts that have an accompanying website/podcast/YouTube that covers Hip-Hop news, releases, and reports on new music. Some of the bigger users in this Niche would be (and this is by no means a comprehensive list, just an example of the kind of pages I'm talking about);

• nojumper
• elevator_
• hiphopdx
• Complex
• HipHopDX
• XXL
• pigsandplans (Pidgeons & Planes)

Because these pages are usually complementary to an accompanying website/podcast/YouTube, a lot of the pictures posted are promotional, intended to get people to go back to the main form of media. Otherwise, these pages will post when a major artist has a new release, when news is breaking in the Hip-Hop world, and other misc. content like a rapper's birthday, or a post trying to spark discussion on the anniversary of a major release. Below are a couple examples of posts taken from hiphopdx:

NOTE: I can't post pictures because of my account age, but check out one of the above blogs for a sense of the content.

From my limited research I see most of the smaller blogs in this subset somewhere in the 3-6k follower range. I have seen a large number of Hip-Hop Blogs that post this type of content in that area, and it seems this is where growth will stagnate. My speculation is that this is a fairly over-saturated sub topic in this follower range. While it may not be too difficult to grow your page to this range, there is only so much news out there and all of the blogs are posting about the same major releases and topics. In order to separate yourself from the pack you will have to start posting high-quality and original content so people see a point to follow your page over the others out there.

Artist Fan Pages:
This is the second largest sub-set of fan pages that I have found. Typically these pages will focus on one major artists (Kanye, Drake, Tupac, etc.) and will post pictures of them, screenshots of their posts on social media, and news specifically related to that artist. These pages can gain a large following, but beware of saturation in regard to very large artists as there are thousands of fan pages already out there. Looking just at Drake fan pages, here are a few blogs of note:

• drakepolska: 34.1k followers
• aboodovo: 74.7k followers
• drake_official1: 293k followers
• ovomarlene: 70.3k followers
• drake: 380k followers
• And countless other pages in the 1-10k follower range. Just search "drake fan" in Instagram

I have not attempted to grow an artist fan page yet, but I would suspect that you could see fast initial growth making a page for a major artist, but it will but difficult to break through the stagnation range as there are so many accounts posting the same content. I would suggest picking a smaller, more niche artist that does not have many fan pages yet, and trying to grow that. If you pick a smaller artist who you think has potential, and become the authoritative fan page on that account, your account could explode in growth if they blow up with a major song/project.

Hip-Hop Culture/Fashion
I have not done much research into this sub topic, as I am focusing on setting up accounts in the first two before I move onto this area. However, this sub topic generally consists of photos of rappers who have unique senses of style/are heavily involved in the fashion world. Two of the more prominent rappers who would fit into this category are Tyler, the creator & A$AP Rocky. Anyone who has more information on this please post below and I will update this section. This sub topic has high crossover into the Hypebeast sub-set of the fashion world.

Music Videos
If you are running a blog/news page, posting about new music videos seems to drive a good bit of traffic. The easiest thing to do is to simply post the cover art, or a still from the video, but if you have time it is well worth it to cut a 20-30s clip from the video and upload that. Additionally, if you can a border around the video with the artist, song title, and tagging your page this will help as well. Any help with this hashtag list is appreciated.

I follow all of those big pages. I also grew up around hip hop culture. Let me give you some advice: in hip hop EVERY single thing is about image. From the rappers to the clothes to the women to the journalists to the authority sites online. You have to REALLY know hip hop. If people sense you are a fraud, that you're not "real" then they won't take you seriously.

Just like how rappers are constantly beefing with each other over who's the tougher gangsta or the king of their city, hip hop authority sites are also constantly trying to expose one another. Take, for example, XXL. A rapper named Nav who is pretty big got pissed that XXL would not feature him on the cover of their magazine. He literally posted a picture of the editor in chief of XXL and said to his fans that "he doesn't give a fuck about XXL because THIS is who picks who goes on the cover" For context, the picture showed a nerdy looking white woman who looked like she knew about hip hop just as much as she knew about astro physics.

The crazy thing is she actually probably knows a lot about hip hop, but again, image is everything. Complex took hold of this news and on their show they tried to completely discredit XXL and say that XXL is not reputable or respected anymore and that complex and other people who know the culture should get together and create something similar to XXL.

Another point about hip hop is the beef between rappers. 6ix9ine is popping right now. Every rapper is trying to come at his head because it's good publicity. You're going to have to know about all of this and more when you start your site or whatever.

Great point, and I think this is a huge reason there are so many smaller blogs out there that stagnate after 3-6k and get no attention: they have not created an image around themselves that they are a reputable/authoritative source. Piggybacking on this, pages that advertise how much it costs to get promo from them, or overly promote artist that have clearly paid to get on their page (that do not have good music) quickly create an image as a promotion cash-farm and people will not want to listen to the music promoted through that blog.

One thing to note is that you have to actually ENJOY the scene and not just do it for the "MONEY" because it's a real culture that MANY people respect, I'm a hip hop artist myself and I support this!

I chose this niche because I'm super interested in it. In order to grow in this beyond stagnation range you have to love what you're doing!

I will say, though, that I have noticed there are almost NO accounts for sale in this niche and you can reach a few thousand followers VERY easily with botting techniques if you are just trying to sell accounts.

I have 2 accounts aside from my main account that I am 100% botting growth on and I am seeing about 50-75 followers a day. All I do is auto follow/unfollow, and I have Jarvee set up to repost from 20 accounts that post high quality content. Both of the accounts I have using this method are growing at that rate with 0 user input.

Well, I checked on Fiverr for gigs that would help people in the hip-hop niche and there seems to be some pretty good gigs to get you on blogs. I'll test out a few and if you want to know how it goes go ahead and PM me. Getting on blogs is real good for google SEO

Exactly. Buying blog posts on Fiverr has done wonders for my Google SEO when people type in my name or songs they can see all the blog posts from when I bought on fiverr. A lot of the sellers sell for cheap too so I highly recommend it. They also usually write really good things about the music too, so fans will see lots of good reviews.

Wow, that's an actually inexpensive extremely useful tactic in music promotion. Blog posts seem just as important as followers for social media presence/outreach.

Is that really truth? I have heard about so many rappers talking about taking bullets like the terminator etc etc and in the meantime found out that many of them are ''sugar'' boys.. especially in this age.. isn't it?
