Before i start i will say that i have no idea if this idea is actually possible to implement.

There should be a button for users to click when they see a post that is useless / spam and if enough people report a post it is deleted or hidden in a moderator review queue.

This would work on a weighted point system where the rank, post count, join date, and feedback of the accounts reporting a post are put into some equation vs the original posters reputation. If a certain threshold is met the post will be deleted/hidden.

This is needed and different from how moderators moderate the forums because mods only delete posts that are breaking the rules and not posts that are useless.

An example of the usage:
Sometimes new members go into threads and just rewrite previous comments to boost their post count and it really gets annoying.

Moderators will never be able to handle the mass amount of comments like this due to the size of the forum.

Obviously this will not work the same in the marketplace, so maybe not implement it there.

Not true at all, trust me. I will clean threads / profiles where people are pointlessly posting rubbish just to bump their post counts.

Well, i think you are not paying attention enough.

I saw moderators deleting threads/replies that were rubish....

Hell - i got some replies deleted

We actually delete useless comments often.

So often that it is almost automated when I do it.

Like @MisterF and @BassTrackerBoats, I often comb through threads and delete useless comments.

To clarify, pointless comments are any comments where a user:
  1. Spins an older post
  2. Posts numerous short messages (which is against the rule, more specifically rule 3.5)
  3. Copy/pastes a post
  4. Engages in any other form of post count inflation
Moderators will never be able to handle the mass amount of comments like this due to the size of the forum.
We can bulk select and delete posts, so it's not terribly difficult for us to handle those comments. It's just a matter of ticking a box, and I often do it while I'm just reading the forum.

Isn't what you are suggesting a needlessly complicated version of the "Report" function?

This is basically what the “rep” button was isn’t it? I can’t remember now if that was just for the user or could be used to reference a specific post. But it was basically the same thing.

That didn’t work out because it was abused too much.

I think this would be the same, it would or be used too often for people who wanted to state their personal opinion about a post or a user and that would make it a nightmare to moderate.

Report button should sufficient and it does work the same way - see a post that’s against the rules, report it and it will get dealt with. The only difference is the reports are not visible to anyone but mods/admins so there’s no politics involved, and reporting is for clear rule breaks so there shouldn’t be any abuse of the reporting system, and it’s an asset to the mods and admins rather than a time drain.
