I was searching online for information on one of the sporting festivals my former state runs, and was shocked to find that they no longer owned the dot com. Of course, I bought it.

Now, I am wondering how to monetize it. I have taken the number one spots for all of the business sites that used to link to it, and I have still have retained the top spot in search engines over their new .org site. In fact, I would say that anyone searching for this event will probably hit my site most of the time.

The big question is that now that I have the site, and a place holder for the site, what do I put there to make money?

dating or adultfriendfinder....

"meet hot girls in your town..."

I think selling it would get me some quick cash to use for another project, but I am hoping to cash in on having the .com for a while. The event is a 3 day weekend of food, athletic events, and music. I own all the top spots for it, so I am thinking more along the lines of something that will get the people to check out my site multiple times, or at the least click some offeres.

I thought about a social network, a organization site with email submission, or even a blog covering the event.

Say you are in of support to get the event rolling, put a paypal sign up.
The OP is going to want to avoid any false claims that he is a part of setting up the event to get donations, or he might have legal troubles. He is ranking for a state event with a domain once owned by the state, so he will have theirs eyes watching him...

Exactly. I think it is probably run by the County, and that someone was lax about renewing. Either way, I am getting all kinds of free traffic, as the average person just puts in (Eventname.com).

I just need a way to turn this into a money maker.

Not exactly, but it has a hometown type vibe to it, and gets thousands of hits.

forum, get people talking about the event.

keep them coming back to hit them up with ads all the time

I would sell advertising to local businesses.

Only people really interested in an event are people from that town or nearby.

Seems like easy money. Not a ton of $$ but at least some.

A bit more than that actually, as it also has a several sports tournaments that are played all over the various towns in the county. Usually have about 200-300 teams from across the state. Prize money is given to tournament winners, both men and women. This is a pretty big deal statewide.

Here are the parameters:

Statewide event, similar to the state fair in recognition.

Sports oriented.

I have the name, and free publicity that comes with it.

Now, I just need something besides a wordpress page to monetize it.

No. It's just a domain name. Kind of like when a porno company had the name zelda. eventually Nintendo bought it from them.
