Windows Server for high CPU tasks - is this even possible??

I would say nope. Its comparable to Xeon 1230v3 or little slower, so comparable to your current i7 CPU.
+ HDD, you wont benefit from hdd.

Same what i thought. For your setup go with more cores as they will be able to dedicate to more processes so you will get better performance in the end.

Or wait for something in between that and the next $149 option to come in stock.
I'm not in a huge rush so can keep an eye on it, but if you think the above would suffice for my application, then it's a no brainier!

This one scores around 1200 in cinebench
Dual Xeon 2670 scores around 2000 in cinebench so its 60% faster than dual Xeon 5650

I had this servers in past for around $49, it was good deal then but at $89 per month its crappy deal.

Thanks guys, all this info is very helpful and much appreciated! The plan is to eventually have a better PC/setup at home, but as the initial investment for a server is low compared to all the upgrades/replacements - I would like to try a 'proof of concept' using this first, ideally.

Unfortunately the browser setup is better suited for this as the site sends live data and updates it's structure regularly (encrypting packets, SSL, etc). The cost in time to manually review and adjust every time it's updated would end up costing more than the hardware itself.



Thanks, that's the one I was looking at too. My current RAM is 8GB with 4 Cores/8 Thread (HDD) and as mentioned, handles around 6 browsers ok. Do you think this one should handle 40 browsers @ ~0.45 GB/Browser?

My only worry with these servers is the OS, as I am developing using Python 3 and Windows 10 based tools, which won't be supported in Windows 2008 Enterprise. Is it allowed/fairly straight forward to change to Win10 on a dedicated server such as this?

I highly highly doubt you'll be able to get Windows 10 due to licensing issues. I would get Windows 2012 r2 and try it there. As far as the cpu, I'd get the one I suggested. If you want to go the vps route it's doable but you won't get as much performance for the price

I said it's doable if the OP wants to go that route, but it's not going to be a cost saving solution. Also, you are going to need to consider OS licensing costs.

Yeah but VPS is going to be a performance hit even vs dedicated with same specs.

Yes it is. But like I said it's still doable if he wants to go that route. Otherwise a dedicated server will be the best route, with server 2012

Dual Xeon E5-2670, 96GB, 2x480GB SSD, 16 Core

I was able to open and run all 40 browsers without maxing CPU/memory usage but am now facing another problem. That is, even if I run a single browser - the graphics (FPS) on things like sites with many images or videos is very low and this is not only visual, but the Python code automating the browser itself (running on the server) also runs slow as a result.

I have raised a ticket to check with the supplier to see if there is anything they advise, but as you guys have much experience and have already helped me a lot - was wondering if you had any advice on this please? I suspect that as servers like this likely have bare minimum video capability, it may be a hardware issue (so nothing much I can do), but if there's something I can change (features, software, etc) I could definitely try it out.

I've already tested both Chrome & Firefox browsers and also tried running Desktop Experience as well as disabling hardware acceleration with little to no difference, so would appreciate any advice. Thanks

Did you contact your Server vendor yet? What did they tell?

It’s a dedicated server, it has no GPU, it’s not made for watching videos / loading images on your end. There are servers with GPUs, but they are made for rendering stuff. I guess even with a gpu it will be laggy because you have to actually stream the image from the Server to your pc via the RDP. Best you can do is build a machine yourself.
