What is Keyword Research? - PART 1

Wikipedia states that it's a practice that "search engine optimization (SEO) professionals use to find and research alternative search terms that people enter into search engines while looking for a similar subject".

Moz says it's "a core SEO task that involves identifying popular words and phrases people enter into search engines", and "in an attempt to figure out what to rank for".

Alternatively, Conductor.com suggests that it "is the process by which you research popular search terms people type into search engines like Google, and include them strategically in your content so that your content appears higher on a search engine results page (SERP)".

Each of these responses touch on the same basic concepts, but each offers a slightly different angle.
So what is it?

Simply put, all three.

Ergo, let's combine them to see what we can come up with. Can we agree to have this as our new definition?

What is Keyword Research?
"Keyword research is the core process that requires the research and identification of both popular, unpopular, and/or future search terms, their alternatives, and related phrases that people input into the textbox search bars that search engines use to bring end users to their respective
Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs)." -- @Tosmekop
B0MbKjK

So now that we know what it is, how do we do it?

Step 1: Determine your niche. For beginners, this is often the hardest part, when starting from scratch and building a new affiliate site, blog, eCommerce business, ad revenue site, or what have you.
Here is a trick that I sometimes use: *
Feel free to test a few of these. I'll just select the first result that shows for me, which is this.
6g2z379

As you click the "Generate Random Words" button, you'll see words appearing. Keep pressing the button until you come across one that stands out to you, and for any reason. As you can see, I landed on "eyebrow". Now I've got a starting point!

Step 2: Determine your competition. The next thing I'd generally do, is hop on over to Keysearch, to run a search for "eyebrow", and from there, I'll be able to see all sorts of interesting fun facts, such as:
- MOZ PA (Page Authority) of the top 10 competitors.
- MOZ DA (Domain Authority) of the top 10 competitors.
- MOZ mRank (MOZ Page Rank) of the top 10 competitors.
- MOZ mDom (Domain-Level MozRank (or DmR) ) of the top 10 competitors.
- Generic Quantity of Backlinks for the top 10 competitors.
- Meta Title Optimized (SERP Title) of the top 10 competitors.
- Meta Description Optimized (SERP Description) of the top 10 competitors.
- Meta URL Optimized (SERP URL) of the top 10 competitors.
- Top-Level Domain Extension availability.
- And so much more..

***PLEASE NOTE: MOZ is not a property owned by Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft. The MOZ metrics should not be seen as anything more than an estimation of difficulty of your competition. There are so many more factors to examine. Just keep in mind that when you see these metrics, they are not metrics that any of us can confirm that Google actually utilizes within their algorithms. We can only guess and theorize. That being said, these metrics CAN offer us a basic level of insight as to what type of competition we're dealing with.***
Check it out:

From this point, there are several keywords I could choose from, for further examination. If my intention was to make a small, micro-niche authority site, I'm sure I could build an entire site that focuses on "eyebrow tweezers".
Keysearch is a paid tool, by the way. It's not needed, but it does save lots of time.
There is a BST that you can visit, where this tool is sold on BHW. Check it out.

I don't want to focus too much on using paid tools, as when you're first starting out, it's encouraged to first learn the process. Once you've got an understanding of the process, you'll better understand which steps need to be either automated or simplified. That is when you can begin to search for tools that will make your life easier. You won't know which tools you'll need, until you first understand what tedious steps need to be mitigated to streamline your process.

As you continue on with your journey, you're going to come across many different paid tools. Many of which, are not necessarily the standard tools you'll always hear about. There are some of the more hidden gems, such as this rank tracking software, so that you can not only know where you rank for the keywords you know about, but also, the ones you don't. There are more expensive ones that work even better, but this is a cost-effective solution for those of you that may be on a budget. It'll help you find the keywords you rank for, that you may not even be aware of.

Let's get back to the free stuff!

Google has a keyword research tool that's now called the Google Keyword Planner.
Microsoft has a keyword research tool that's called the Bing Keyword Planner.
Fortunately these two companies' Keyword Planner platforms are virtually identical! This means that if you know how to use one, you'll be default know how to use the other. This is great news, because it means you really only need to learn one platform, and you can then apply your knowledge in 2 places!

Step 3: Maximize your playing field. According to a 2015 study conducted by SearchEngineLand, it's been stated that Google controls 65% of internet search, while Bing controls 33%.
N95si0k

Let's do some very simple math...
33% is basically half of 65%, right? I mean, I know it's not exactly half, but I'm ready to get into some keyword research.
I just want you to consider something.
If Google = 65% while Bing = 33%, then isn't it safe to assume that if Google is processing 40,000 search queries per second, Bing is processing 20,000?
Fair enough?
Well, that's a lot of traffic.

Step 4: Gather your LSIs. So what I like to do, is to first find my competition strength for the Google SERPs, and then recheck that data against Bing. Also, once you find your desired keyword(s), the search engines are designed to help you find other keywords that are closely related to the target keyword. These related keywords have a technical name. They're known as Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) keywords.

After Google search of, "eyebrow tweezers":
jLOGUWP

NYaeKvd

After Bing search of, "eyebrow tweezers":
Lhn4dDU

WPrpiaE

THE SEARCH ENGINES ARE LITERALLY TELLING YOU WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT!

- eyebrow tweezers walmart
- eyebrow tweezers target
- eyebrow tweezers amazon
- eyebrow tweezers cvs
- eyebrow tweezers scissors
- eyebrow tweezers with light
- eyebrow tweezers reviews
- eyebrow tweezers with scissor handles
- eyebrow tweezers nz
- best eyebrow tweezers reviews
- eyebrow plucker price
- eyebrow plucker machine
- revlon eyebrow tweezers
- eyebrow plucker online
- eyebrow tweezers with led light
- eyebrow tweezers with handles
- eyebrow tweezers best
- eyebrow tweezers made in germany
- best tweezers for eyebrows
- professional eyebrow tweezers top five
- best tweezers for facial hair
- best tweezers on the market
- la crosse eyebrow tweezers
- long tweezers walmart
With all these closely related keywords, an authority site or silo about eyebrow tweezers shouldn't be difficult to create. Now if you want even less competition, then while using these keywords as Main Keywords and LSI Keywords, you may also use them as Seed Keywords, much like how we did with the previously found Seed, "eyebrow tweezers".

In Part 2 of this guide, we're going to jump into effectively using the Keyword Planner platform.
Stay tuned...

A few things before we begin...
Thing #1: This is NOT the only Keyword Research guide that you can find on BlackHatWorld. That's one thing I absolutely love about our community. If you utilize the search function, you'd be amazed at some of the things you can find.
Thing #2: There is NOT just 1 way to go about carrying out the adventure of Keyword Research.
Thing #3: Keyword Research can be fun. You know the odd looking old man that walks around the beach with a metal detector, searching for valuables? Well, now that's us. We're essentially scanning the internet for keywords people are searching for. That's powerful!
Remember these things, as you search for keywords that can sustain your livelihood.

So, without further ado...............................

L E T ' S G E T I T !
giphy.gif
The Google Keyword Planner - PART 2

Google gives us this, as a guideline for beginning to work with the Google Keyword Planner. I highly encourage you to go check it out.

Step 5: Access the Google Keyword Planner
Go ahead and visit the Google Keyword Planner, by clicking this link:
https://adwords.google.com/ko/KeywordPlanner/Standalone/Home?
Once there, your screen should show this:
rCbDk1o

Go ahead and click the button that says, "Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category". This will enable us the opportunity to input our keyword(s).

Step 6: Setting Your Targeting Options
For this example, let's stick with the Main Seed Keyword we were using, yesterday. Let's go ahead and input, "eyebrow tweezers" into the textbox. Scroll down, and what I like to do, is because we're not focusing on a local product (anyone can use eyebrow tweezers, right?), what I'd do, is target as many places as I can. I want to get relevant traffic by people that are in regions that traditionally speak my language. If I knew Spanish, for example, I'd target every Spanish-speaking place I could, so long as I'm searching/utilizing keywords that are relevant for those areas.

TIP: There are translation tools available that you can use for your site, so you can essentially target anywhere you want, even without knowing the language.
TIP: After you complete your keyword research, you can hire a freelancer to translate your content and have it make sense (ie: You're performing keyword research for a word in Thai, so that you can rank your Date In Asia affiliate website. Surely you can find someone on Fiverr that can read both English and Thai.)

For simplicity, you can see my screenshot, below:
5ma9CeB

I have selected only 5 country locations. These locations, however, are full of people that use the internet, speak my selected language (English), could have an interest in eyebrow tweezers, etc.

A Side-note:
Sometimes you may want to consider keywords that are on a more localized level. Let's say I'm searching for the following keyword: chicago cardiology
In a more localized instance such as this, I may or may not want to narrow my focus. If I wanted to see how many people that are not just in Chicago, but also in the surrounding areas of Chicago AND searching for my keyword, I'd use this:
5hBFHuK

Do you see where my cursor is pointing?
Notice how it says, "Chicago IL, United States - Nielson DMA region"?
http://www.nielsen.com/intl-campaigns/us/dma-maps.html reports that:
fzyUDvN

When available, this Nielson DMA region option allows you to also target the immediate surrounding geographical area(s) of your target location and potentially find more customers than if I were to perform keyword research for searchers in Chicago, alone.

Next, remember how I referred to the languages people speak? You can actually change, add to, and/or subtract the languages that are being searched, simply by clicking on where it says, "English", on my screen, or whichever language appears on yours. From that UI, you can make changes to target other languages.

Now, something else that's important to note, is the word, "Google".
ekgjjK7

If you click this button, you'll be given the option to also check the Search Partners of Google. Here is a list, that I swiped from SEO Profiler:
You know how much the old folks love Ask.com and AOL Search. ;)
Just something to consider.

Back to eyebrow tweezers...

Negative Keywords
Since we're using "eyebrow tweezers" as our focus, let's assume for a moment, that we're building an Amazon affiliate website, where people can come to our site and add items to their cart, and then checkout from Amazon. Wouldn't it then make sense to not include, say, "Walmart", in our selection of keywords? I don't want you to go to Walmart. I want you to buy from me. I can tell Google to not include any keywords that make reference to Walmart.
Kuet8hB

Date Range
Next, you've got the option to select your Date Range. Because eyebrows aren't seasonal items (I think), people that need eyebrow tweezers, should always be able to use them.

Valentine's Day is fast approaching, and let's say you wanted to throw up a landing page for an affiliate network that sells stuffed teddy bears, and drive quick PPC traffic to it, and wanted to see how hot of an item stuffed teddy bears are.

You'd find a program, and then perform keyword research. People are so focused on Amazon/MaxBounty/etc.. Basically all these big name places that EVERYONE is using. You're making things hard for yourself. Here's what I'd do. Go where everyone else isn't (though I suppose now they will be).
IUXUtdu

You can actually compare custom date ranges of how much people were searching for your keyword(s), through various time periods surrounding your holiday of choice or whichever seasonal whatever you're trying to promote! That's awesome!

Keyword Filters
2 x (This section may be very important, depending on your next goals. Proper keyword research is vital, and then how you go about selecting the keywords you choose, can determine the simplicity or difficulty of your success.)
Read that, again.
One of our BHW Moderators (@Zwielicht), has created an epic SEO guide that would be incredibly strong for you, once you've chosen your proper keywords. This will enable you to efficiently bring consistent organic traffic to your website, as you begin to climb your way up through the SERPs. He focuses on finding keywords that receive smaller search volumes of less than 1,000 searches per month. My experience has taught me that this is a rather good practice.

Here's the way I see it. 1 keyword that receives 10,000 searches/month is probably going to be a heck of a lot more difficult to rank for than 20 keywords that receive 500 searches/month. Why? Because more than likely, there will be much less competition for those smaller keywords (this isn't always true, but the chances are good, in many instances). Plus, let's say those are 20 different articles, with each centering around one of those keywords as the main keyword. Now you're building authority, because guess what else happens?
XMXxDhV

While you're building 20 articles that focus on 20 keywords, you're picking up many LSI keywords without even trying. Before you even realize, you're ranking for search terms that you hadn't even thought about.

The competition section is mostly for Adwords, BUT there is a bit of a catch... The competition levels are generally ignored by most people looking to just perform keyword research. That's a NO-NO. The 3 competition types are indicators for how many Advertisers (people using Adwords PPC) are actively bidding on those terms. Now why is this important for SEO?

Two reasons:
Reason #1: Think about it... If you can see exactly which keywords advertisers are willing to and actively spending their money on, wouldn't it make sense that there's a reason for it? If I'm selling eyebrow tweezers, or anything else, then absolutely, I want to see some keywords that have buyers' intent!
Reason #2: It may not happen as often as we'd all like, but what if you happen across a hot keyword with high PPC competition that also happens to be extremely easy to rank for, in terms of SEO? Often, these can be those $5+/click keywords, because the bid wars keep the advertisers wanting to get 1 customer that can gain them thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.

Now does that matter so much for eyebrow tweezers?
Probably not.
But what if your keyword is about timeshares or cruise vacation packages or something more costly?
QX3FV7y
Keyword Options
For eyebrow tweezers, I really only wish to set the option to see terms that are closely related to the subject of eyebrow tweezers. You may wish to change this, if you want to go more broad with your search, for me, because my website would really only focus on eyebrow tweezers, I'd save it with this change to my keyword options settings.
R4Xe1Ct

Keywords to Include
Much like the Negative Keywords list, this setting will basically have the opposite effect. For example, if I'm building a website about watches that I'm selling, and I only wish to focus on Rolex products, I could include the keyword, "rolex". This way, my results will be more specific to what I'm trying to find. For the sake of this tutorial, I'll leave this field blank.
R4Xe1Ct

Now it's time to click the "Get Ideas" button! Finally!
And now we've got our buyers' keywords!
y3roVaf

In Part 3 of this guide, we're going to analyze the results from our optimized Keyword Planner search.
Stay tuned...

Annihilating the SERPs - PART 3

Before we proceed...
Let's recap -
/*
Step 1: Determine your niche.
Step 2: Determine your competition.

Step 3: Maximize your playing field.
Step 4: Gather your LSIs.
Step 5: Access the Google Keyword Planner
Step 6: Setting Your Targeting Options
*/
tp0ags9

Step 7: Combine & Reduce.

So now that we're all caught up -- welcome back.
So back in Part 4, we gathered some LSIs. What I'd like to do, is add those to the list of keywords that we just pulled, yesterday.
Here are the keywords from yesterday:
professional eyebrow tweezers, good eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers with light, top rated eyebrow tweezers, revlon eyebrow tweezers, automatic eyebrow tweezers, scissor tweezers eyebrow, where to buy eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers with handles, tweezerman eyebrow tweezers, best professional eyebrow tweezers, best rated eyebrow tweezers, pointed eyebrow tweezers, red brand eyebrow tweezers, rubber tipped eyebrow tweezers, round tip eyebrow tweezers, german made eyebrow tweezers, best eyebrow tweezers in the world, stainless steel eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers and scissors, buy eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow scissor tweezers, boots eyebrow tweezers, best eyebrow tweezers reviews, best eyebrow tweezers australia, eyebrow tweezers reviews, solingen eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers amazon, anastasia eyebrow tweezers, japanese eyebrow tweezers, lacrosse eyebrow tweezers, plastic eyebrow tweezers, bobbi brown eyebrow tweezers, mac eyebrow tweezers

We're going to keep these, but also, let's also add the keywords from Part 4:
eyebrow tweezers target, eyebrow tweezers amazon, eyebrow tweezers cvs, eyebrow tweezers scissors, eyebrow tweezers with light, eyebrow tweezers reviews, eyebrow tweezers with scissor handles, eyebrow tweezers nz,best eyebrow tweezers reviews, eyebrow plucker price, eyebrow plucker machine, revlon eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow plucker online, eyebrow tweezers with led light, eyebrow tweezers with handles, eyebrow tweezers best, eyebrow tweezers made in germany, best tweezers for eyebrows, professional eyebrow tweezers top five, best tweezers for facial hair, best tweezers on the market,la crosse eyebrow tweezers

Now, before you call me out on forgetting to add 2 of the keywords from Part 4, do you remember what we discussed, yesterday? If not, then please go take a look. Apology accepted. ;)

Here's my combined list of keywords:
professional eyebrow tweezers, good eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers with light, top rated eyebrow tweezers, revlon eyebrow tweezers, automatic eyebrow tweezers, scissor tweezers eyebrow, where to buy eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers with handles, tweezerman eyebrow tweezers, best professional eyebrow tweezers, best rated eyebrow tweezers, pointed eyebrow tweezers, red brand eyebrow tweezers, rubber tipped eyebrow tweezers, round tip eyebrow tweezers, german made eyebrow tweezers, best eyebrow tweezers in the world, stainless steel eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers and scissors, buy eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow scissor tweezers, boots eyebrow tweezers, best eyebrow tweezers reviews, best eyebrow tweezers australia, eyebrow tweezers reviews, solingen eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers amazon, anastasia eyebrow tweezers, japanese eyebrow tweezers, lacrosse eyebrow tweezers, plastic eyebrow tweezers, bobbi brown eyebrow tweezers, mac eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers target, eyebrow tweezers amazon, eyebrow tweezers cvs, eyebrow tweezers scissors, eyebrow tweezers with light, eyebrow tweezers reviews, eyebrow tweezers with scissor handles, eyebrow tweezers nz,best eyebrow tweezers reviews, eyebrow plucker price, eyebrow plucker machine, revlon eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow plucker online, eyebrow tweezers with led light, eyebrow tweezers with handles, eyebrow tweezers best, eyebrow tweezers made in germany, best tweezers for eyebrows, professional eyebrow tweezers top five, best tweezers for facial hair, best tweezers on the market,la crosse eyebrow tweezers

Okay, so now we're going to be using another free tool, called "TextMechanic", to remove the duplicates keyword entries.

There were 6 total duplicates, according to TextMechanic.
( 36 dupe of 28 ): eyebrow tweezers amazon
( 39 dupe of 3 ): eyebrow tweezers with light
( 40 dupe of 26 ): eyebrow tweezers reviews
( 43 dupe of 24 ): best eyebrow tweezers reviews
( 46 dupe of 5 ): revlon eyebrow tweezers
( 49 dupe of 9 ): eyebrow tweezers with handles
So now I'll just pluck 1 instance of each of those 6 keywords out, and now I'm left with this:
professional eyebrow tweezers, good eyebrow tweezers, top rated eyebrow tweezers, automatic eyebrow tweezers, scissor tweezers eyebrow, where to buy eyebrow tweezers, tweezerman eyebrow tweezers, best professional eyebrow tweezers, best rated eyebrow tweezers, pointed eyebrow tweezers, red brand eyebrow tweezers, rubber tipped eyebrow tweezers, round tip eyebrow tweezers, german made eyebrow tweezers, best eyebrow tweezers in the world, stainless steel eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers and scissors, buy eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow scissor tweezers, boots eyebrow tweezers, best eyebrow tweezers australia, solingen eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers amazon, anastasia eyebrow tweezers, japanese eyebrow tweezers, lacrosse eyebrow tweezers, plastic eyebrow tweezers, bobbi brown eyebrow tweezers, mac eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow tweezers target, eyebrow tweezers cvs, eyebrow tweezers scissors, eyebrow tweezers with light, eyebrow tweezers reviews, eyebrow tweezers with scissor handles, eyebrow tweezers nz,best eyebrow tweezers reviews, eyebrow plucker price, eyebrow plucker machine, revlon eyebrow tweezers, eyebrow plucker online, eyebrow tweezers with led light, eyebrow tweezers with handles, eyebrow tweezers best, eyebrow tweezers made in germany, best tweezers for eyebrows, professional eyebrow tweezers top five, best tweezers for facial hair, best tweezers on the market,la crosse eyebrow tweezers

***NOTE: You actually need to save the Comma Separated Values (CSV) document that Google allows you to download, for TextMechanic. Well, you don't "need to", but it saves some time so you don't have to manually form the vertical list of keywords, so that you can remove the duplicate lines.***

Now let's go plug this into the Google Keyword Planner!
CEt5U9k

One thing you'll notice, is that now when I'm inputting my keywords, I'm no longer necessarily searching for any type of PPC-competitive keywords. I still want things closely related to my niche, I've already got:
Quality from Google
Quality from Bing
Quality from PPC
Now I want:
Quantity from Google

Step 8: Analyze the results (to illustrate a point, I've included my @dp40oz's Keysearch results).
vfB8mx9

Let's examine the first result: best tweezers for eyebrows
Search #1: best tweezers for eyebrows
About 2,520,000 results <- broad search
GCiA6m6

8vdpkeW

Search #2: "best tweezers for eyebrows"
About 9,960 results <- phrase search / competition search
HyMXd7K

iN4wHiZ

Search #3: intitle:"best tweezers for eyebrows"
About 167 results <- optimized competition search
KPZd8YU

vJ2QD58

Search #4: inurl:"best tweezers for eyebrows"
About 480 results <- optimized competition search
eVQzztE

FIUnEmh

Honestly, I don't even need to run this through Keysearch, but I did, because I wanted to take a look at a few more things than what Google searches have revealed. Generally, if Search #3 and Search #4, are less than 1,000, and especially between the two of them combined, then most likely, your competition is not going to be too difficult to surpass. As you grow your website, you'd likely be able to beat this competition by only using high quality, relevant content, and with a properly interlinked website. On Keysearch, you'll see that there's a feature that shows if the .gTLDs have been registered (alternatively, you can search your keywords on Namecheap and/or GoDaddy) or not.
HbJwqpv

Not only are ALL gTLDs available, but also, the search trends are in upwards momentum!
If you're building a small shop or micro niche review site, http://BestTweezersForEyebrows.com could be perfect! I know EMDs aren't as powerful as they once were, but that's just one keyword. You've got quite a few of them. That's about 60 reviews for different tweezers that can be used for eyebrows. That's an authority site waiting to happen!

zcKMZjW

Anyway, that's pretty much all there is to it. You can take the top results for the Search #3 and Search #4, and run each of those domains through a software like Ahrefs, to uncover which keywords those weaksauce sites are ranking for. Target those, build content, interlink, and destroy those weaklings!

From this point, you've got one great keyword to use.
DfY4lfb

Now return to your Google Keyword Planner results, and it's on to the next one!
The more you complete this process, the faster it gets.

Thank you for sticking in there with me, over these last 3 days. There's a lot of information, and I'd say you're pretty badass to have stuck around to read through it all. Remember guys, some of the tools I mentioned, are paid tools that honestly aren't really "needed". I always encourage people to learn to do things manually, first. And then you can automate. If you've enjoyed this tutorial or learned something new or absolutely hated it, then I welcome your feedback.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks. I'm glad you like it.

By the way, just to reiterate a bit of what I said in "Step 6: Setting Your Targeting Options".. I'd like to direct you guys to a piece of genius, by @KraftyKyle:
"Why try to make money on a keyword where people aren't looking to spend money."
Those are words from the wise. Take heed, as you proceed with your keyword research.

Thanks for a great tutorial. Could you tell more about how to find/reaserch a nche keyword or suggest some materials (blog, course, etc)
