Amazon Affiliate Deducted 30% Tax

Last month I guess they automatically updated my tax information and I even received an email from them. But today when I checked in my payment history page, I see my current Withhold Tax rate is 30% even though I am not from US. I received my payment through payoneer just now and I have also updated my tax information which shows now current withhold rate at 0%. I wrote an email to them and I'd like to know your thoughts about this. Do you guys think I'll receive the remaining amount? or is it already gone to the US government? Pretty tensed as the amount is around $2000.

Hi, I am from India but Amazon directly deducted the amount and I don't even know where the money went.

The reason you were deducted the 30% tax fees is because your tax form expired December 31st 2017. You were sent an email on 12/06/2017 and 12/20/2017 letting you know that your tax form needed to be updated.

Thanks for quick reply Sephrata, but I am not sure how do I claim it back. I don't even have any information other than my amazon affiliate account. Also I read from your link that I need to file an income tax return if I want claim a refund.

Any other help is highly appreciated.

You would need to file an income tax return. There should be some guides for this on the web or Amazon's forums as this won't be an uncommon issue.

Couldn't find anything similar on web and I can't file an income tax to US government as I already file in India. I guess that's it. Thanks for your help though.

Your tax status in India has no bearing on filing a tax return with IRS.

You need to update your self, Amazon never update TAX Form it’s self.

If you don’t update before Payout, Amazon deduct 30% for Tax.

You should update it now correctly to stop this deduction.

Maybe, You can reclaim the Tax if you have any USA tax id like EIN Or ITIN.

You need to check the double taxation treaty between the US and your country. If the withholding tax is higher than it should have been, then the only way to recover the money is to file a US tax return.

Hi,
we are 15% tax treaty with our country and i feel they have a withhold of 30%. the amazon affiliate customer support says there no way to get that money back.

Amazon cannot pay that money back, but the IRS can. You need to file a tax return.

No Problems on my side my withholding rate is still 0%.It has to be your country.Check your tax treaty like

The same thing with me. My country does not have a treaty with the US. So I have to pay the IRS 30% tax. I might as well move there then.
