sell as website or just domain?

Hi guys

I have a relatively good two word domain name that i've owned since 2001. I stuck a blog on it with the idea of making millions in the funny images / viral content with the help of cheap facebook traffic, back in 2011 but lazyness and a thousand other things got in the way. So its been dorment since that time, infact I only just relised I was paying to keep this site and domain up! lol

Anyway, I want to sell the site or domain on flippa. Its got zero traffic and only made a few dollars back in the day with adsese but took that off as the site wasn't active so didn't want to risk my account.

So, do you think its worth selling the site even though the new owner will have to start from scratch or just the domain?
I presume the website for sale section of flippa has more traffic, so more eye balls on the auction?
The website though is pretty worthless.

I'm not sure if i'm allowed to post on here the url but it is pretty good imo, short, easy to remember and spell, and brandable etc and could have quite a few uses not just a viral content site.

Posting the URL here might just get you problems (most of these threads are public). If your domain has a really nice name you could sell it for a good price as it is 17-years old but my suggestion for you is to keep the domain/website and start doing SEO to it as it will be easier for you to rank it for a relevant niche due to the age.

I'll be honest and say the niche is not somthing that intrests me anymore. And its not in high industry like health care or finance.

Still. On a long term it will surely make you more money than just getting one-time payment for selling it. However, it is up to you. If you decide to sell it, sell just the domain because most likely it will be bought by someone that know what he is doing and he can "replace" the current state of it anytime (what I want to say is the price will not vary that much if you sell it with the template altogether). Also, check other similar niche domains (the age as well) to have a clue about the average price so that you don't sell it for a lower price than it actually has to be.

good point mate. I have no idea what to sell it for lol I need to do some research first. I would like to build somthing on it but i have no idea what to be honest, hence the sale. Its a pitty as its very old site with no seo done to it to potenitaly harm it.

Having a "virgin" website (haha) that is 17 years old is the best thing you can ever start with in terms of SEO. Just search through BHW and start working on your website. Trust me, if done right, you will start making money in no time. Even if you don't build links, with just a good onsite SEO you can reach the top positions for particular set of keywords (again, due to the authority your website has because of the age).

Well, if you try to keep the niche as close as possible to what it really was created for you will have bigger chance because in the eyes of google your website's URL plays a role in the ranking factors as well as the content that was/will be on that domain.

Is there any other good metrics apart form the age, DA,PA,TF etc at all ?

If it's clean and brandable it might be worth a couple of quid due to the age.

True, but you want 17 years old content on it, not a 17 years old blank page. That brings only a very small benefit, if any.

Considering that the site is a viral image 9gag rip off I presume, then the age of content won't matter much.

Regarding Flippa, unless the site makes actual money, then it can't be flipped. If it has some decent metrics and can be used as a PBN, then you can sell it for its SEO value. If it doesn't have either, then it's price is $0.

So getting back to what @Veil123 said, I would consider giving it a shot and make some money out of it.

If it’s got any decent metrics it might be worth something.

If it’s a very catchy domain or very short it might be worth something.

If it doesn’t fit either of those categories then I don’t think it’ll be worth much. And in any case I agree with the other guys here, you should make a go of building out this site - even if you fail, you’ll have added at least some value making it easier to sell.

Even if it does not have any metrics at all except the age it will still give him a huge jump in front of the others if he do not change the main subject of the website as a whole (google will "reset" his website if changed completely). As from my experience, google does value the older sites (even if it was a domain that stood still for a long time).

P.S. I am not talking about domains that have expired and were re-registered after a period of time, but for those that were kept "alive" for the time being.

I know what you mean and I agree, though that boost is not as significant as if you had content just lying around for years and then decided to point some backlinks to it. There surely is benefit for an older, permanently registered site with an old content, but considering it's a funny image site, I am not sure how much benefit will older images bring. But well, we will see if OP decides to go with it.
