Hostgator - What happened?

I used to use HostGator years ago, possibly 10 or so? They were always great back in the day.
Long story short, I signed up to a basic hosting package with them for $20 last night. The following information was very well hidden during the checkout process, but ultimately they want $107 per year to renew the hosting, ahaha.

Also, because I used PayPal to pay, they want a copy of my passport to start the refund process. Yeah, i'm not giving my passport to some hosting company, that's like me giving a copy of my passport to Tesco. What a joke.

I left Bluehost years ago, which is the same company. I host with a member on here, a dedicated server. Never looked back

Hostgator does indeed seek for ID verification as well but it is generally upon subscription.

I don't think they will do anything wrong with your passport though.
It is just a step they use to reduce the refund rates by setting a barrier. (it is just statistics)

The whole thing was dirty, masking the real price and what @HostStage said above, avoid guys. There's much better on the market here for much less.

Anyone can recommend some good hosting company with reasonable prices?

I used to be with Hostgator 5-6 years back and they were fine then and i left them when support was becoming issue with them. I think their service has declined in last few years even when i see some good offers from them i stay away as quality is more important no matter if i need to pay even more.
Take this to twitter explaining the issue and they should help you rightaway.

Same story here basically, but about 6-7 years ago. Their support has also gone downhill. I switched off them too but I didn't have to do any passport or ID crap. I didn't auth them on my PayPal though; I always avoid this in favor of paying manually, so nobody pulls the "hide charges in fine print" scam on me.

You might have to just deauth them from your PayPal and count your losses if you don't wanna send your passport and they refuse to refund without it.

I'm cancelling my last and the oldest Hostgator account in the next few days. Had it for 7 years straight.

I have a site on hostgator, that I really can't be arsed moving, anyway, i pay monthly, and never had an issue,
I've contacted their support before, and it's always been fast.

I know that people consider them pretty bad, but they never gave me any hassle, although they do try to bamboozle you into
upgrading your payment commitment on the billing page, but that's been it for me.

The response I got to this was:
"Hello, Thank you for your response. If you are unable to verify your account with us we can not proceed with the activation of your account."

This very may likely be some kind of bot, just counting it as a $20 loss and moving on. Not worth my time even bothering. Thanks all, just be careful!

this is the main reason i changed to namecheap... a lot of host company ask us about paypal verification.

if anyone know others hosting like namecheap which didnt ask paypal verification pls tell me

Ever since hostgator got bought by EIG hosting, their service went downhill. Don't know EIG hosting? Google it. You'll be surprised by how many hosting services they own. Your host might be one of them... lol...

A couple of years back I moved all domains I had and hosting from them and what should have been quite a straight forward process took days.
Before the domains were transferred though, I discovered twice that the nameservers were being changed back to them, thus showing holding pages.
