1. The anterior part: This transmits the inferior petrosal sinus which mainly receives the auditory veins.
2. The intermediate part: This transmits the vagus and accessory nerves.
3. The posterior part: This transmits the sigmoid sinus which receives blood from the veins and transforms it to the brain.
The size of the Jugular foramen is variable and asymmetrical. But a normal one will appear well corticated in the bone scan. The study of the bone structure and not the size is what determines if there is a problem with the Jugular foramen anatomy.
What is the Jugular foramen syndrome?
This is a condition that affects the Jugular foramen anatomy and will cause lesions that affect several parts of the brain. When there is a tumor in the Jugular foramen or there is some type of abnormality, this will cause pressure on different parts of the veins that pass through which will affect the blood supply that comes out of or from the brain. This syndrome can be caused by glomus tumors in most cases. In other cases it is caused by meningioma which is a set of tumors that affect the different membranes that surround the central nervous system. While most of these tumors will cause no symptoms, sometimes they can affect the jugular foramen and can lead to serious symptoms. 1. Dysphonia or hoarseness: This happens when a person’s voice unexpectedly changes or becomes very rough or harsh. Sometimes the person is unable to produce any voice at all.
2. Soft Palate: This is soft tissue that is located at the back of the mouth and contains no bones. It is composed of 5 different types of muscles that are involved in swallowing and breathing. A problem with the Jungular foramen can affect how the soft palate functions.
3. Deviation of the uvula: This is located next to and connected to the soft palate and its deviation can cause serious problems in the speech and swallowing as it is responsible for the production of thin saliva.
4. Loss of sensory function from the 1/3 posterior end of the tongue: This will cause problems in swallowing and speech.
