Rank and Rent

Hi guys. Thinking of going ahead with the rank and rent model. I had a quick question though if anyone can help:

Let's say for example I'm trying to rank for plumbers in Mayfair, I'd try a variety of similar keywords such as 'emergency plumbers mayfair' etc.

However, my question is would I also try and rank that same site for surrounding areas too?

So, for example given Piccadilly is next to Mayfair would I also try and rank my site for 'plumbers in Piccadilly' or just focus on Mayfair related keywords.

That was probably pretty poorly phrased but cheers in advance for any help.

Depends in your domain choice. If its EMD (plumbersinmayfair.com for example) then doesn't make sense to target multiple locations otherwise just make new pages for each new target keyword on the same domain. So you may have the domain ukplumbers.com you could create ukplumbers.com/plumbers-in-mayfair for example.

Thanks for your comment. I understand how it's done, I'm just asking if it's better to do that or just focus on all the keyword variants for just one town, or both? I'm assuming both for search volume. But I suppose the only drawback is if I'm dominating for say a 20 mile radius, it might be better to dominate for 2 x 10 mile so I can rent 2 sites. If that makes sense.

For the KWs/niche you shared with me I don't like that model.

It will be a ton of work and not the way I would approach things + what is required for local SEO for that industry is going to cost you in a big way.

I think you would be better served on a global basis and either sell advertising on your site or put adsense up there.

I've done the rank and rent thing and it requires a fair amount of customer service as people are prone to hammer you about why they are not getting enough leads or enough conversions and I also think your niche is better suited for some other monetization methods.

if plumbing is a tough market to you, it says it all.

OP: yes this is a hard market for a beginner; it is better to start with a serious market, but there are easier ones.

Who said its a tough market? I said London is the most competitive city for plumbers and you're dumb if after you did keyword research you've decided to go after london lol.

I do local lead gen for cities with wayyy less competition why do I need to fight over leads with ppl like you when I can dominate cities with 0 competition ?

Valid point though, PPL is definitely a viable model and something I've been considering. I'll need to weight it up a bit more and reach a consensus.

as our friend @zionbar has appropriately pointed out, there are more or less easy areas to target but it is not "easy" and very competitive as a matter of fact; but nowadays everything is. So the question is how you want to cut the country into smaller pieces.

You can use generic domain or not, does not really matter.

London is harder to rank for sure yes, but there are so much more people in London. So you do the math.

The choice it yours.

I've done both and don't like either business model at this point in my life... both work, both have legitimate value but if I can make 75% of the profits expected from an active business model as opposed to a passive business model I'm going passive.

10 years ago my thought process would certainly be different but I'm a "make the other guy work" and let me just take the low hanging fruit kind of guy now.
