PBN is not dead dont talk that, just get more and better domains and you will see results. Also i dont know what others do, but me and my partner not bother much about design quality, all wordpress, namecheap and namesilo registars, all whois privacy, 404 to 301 not rebuilding pages, free themes, no logo, no social pages, not looking like real sites just few articles each domain 3-5 obl.. i wait all to index then put links.. it kicking ass in few days after that and honestly some domains get de-indexed some early some after 8-9 months but if 10 drop we buy 20 new. And with all this ''footprints'' we have so many domains still indexed 3+ years no any problems. from footprints we only take care that each domain have different server and ip.
Its hard to explain things in SEO or find proof 100% sure why something is wrong or why not as you hope to be.. Google maybe just hate your site, and if things not go well change domain start again. As for PBN you can build real looking sites and ofcourse thats better, but how much that will cost until you have 50-100 domains and how much money to maintain.. and on all that you are never sure 100% that all will be ok that domains will stay indexed always and pass manual review, people who work in web spam team are not stupid. So again dont lose hope, get more domains and keep working.

Well after 2 months of waiting (no other backlinks added) my website climbed from page 4 to position 11 in less than 24 hours... Insane, hope will keep go up in the next days... so PBN works

I think that expired domains are DEAD, or will be in a near future.

Let's think about it: the target of Google is to fight against marketing and aware guys. They want natural links. Who, except a SEO fox, would buy an expired domain name with an improbable name? Nobody.

I really think they started to implement this. Personnally, if I see someone who revive a domain name like "lkjlakjzlkjlkj.com" which is composed of random characters or random words or - more generally - is just "improbable", I would immediately think: "ok, he tries to beat me, but I know this domain name is not legit: it is an old one, an improbable one, except for SEO". BOOM, penalty. But a rampant one to hide my new weapon: the analysis of randomness of a domain name and the fact that someone bought particularly this domain a day after it has expired.

I reiterate: you just bought an improbable domain name one day or two after it has expired. You are flagged. Don't believe it if you want.

So, as an additional factor when you buy an expired domain name, ask yourself: "is it a domain name that would have been bought by someone else, not a SEO guy?". And after this question, you will realize that expired domain names are just dead: no more long-term opportunity.

Auctions are different, and probably, a better system.

Agree, no basis at all. Don't believe it if you want. On my side, I am pretty sure that a) ANONYM domain name plays a role in SEO b) Bought domain names quickly after it has expired play a role too c) especially if the name is improbable/random.

A good test would be to compare a guy who set up a PBN for 3 years using new domain names, and the guy who buy expired ones. Honnestly, after 3 years, I am not sure the latter win.

I have pbns from different years but honestly it is hard to know what works for sure.
old ones have some decay, new ones who knows.
