Thank you!! There's a pretty solid Quora post on the topic to introduce you to the real-time bidding (RTB) ecosystem with the title "What is the Difference between an Ad Exchange and RTB?" (can't post a link yet bc I'm v new).

But to summarize for you: there's a supply side (available ad spots), a demand side (advertisers), and in the middle there's an auction. We optimize the bid prices for those auctions using online machine learning to buy ad spots on behalf of big mobile clients.
