Will getting Google +1's on an article help rank that article in Google searches? Some people say yes, some say no. Here's an interesting article that says Google told a major online publisher (Forbes) that Google +1's DO affect rankings:

http://gizmodo.com/yes-google-uses-its-power-to-quash-ideas-it-doesn-t-li-1798646437

If too long to read, here's a quote that's the most interesting part from the article:

I was working for Forbes at the time, and was new to my job. In addition to writing and reporting, I helped run social media there, so I got pulled into a meeting with Google salespeople about Google's then-new social network, Plus.

The Google salespeople were encouraging Forbes to add Plus's "+1" social buttons to articles on the site, alongside the Facebook Like button and the Reddit share button. They said it was important to do because the Plus recommendations would be a factor in search results.

This sounded like a news story to me. Google's dominance in search and news give it tremendous power over publishers. By tying search results to the use of Plus, Google was using that muscle to force people to promote its social network.

I asked the Google people if I understood correctly: If a publisher didn't put a +1 button on the page, its search results would suffer? The answer was YES.

"The Google salespeople" says it all, doesn't it? The guy was there to sell Google Plus. Not saying he's a lyier and +1s aren't a signal at all, but if it was any significant, people would have noticed long ago.

There are like 200 ranking factors, I don't doubt Plus maybe one, but it's certainly not one worth paying attention to. After you have done your basic onpage homework, it's all about content and links. That's what makes sites rank, content and links, the rest is just sideshows.

i had that social locker shit so people had to unlock by +1 to download the file and all my urls were +1 yet i didnt see any change. thats not the factor you should focus in SEOer's everyday life

I worked for a company that collected data for Google's algorithms. In the 160+ page guidelines there was no mention of Google + at all. I say it has no effect whatsoever on rankings.

the Plus recommendations would be a factor in search results.

"Would be", not is, I would imagine they never bothered to implement this and the quote came from "Google Sales People" not engineers.

When did you work there, please don't say pre 2011 :)

I guess Sales People says it all. They were there to sell Google Plus so they would say YES to anything that would give them advantage.

Google + is dead as fuck and there is nothing they can do to save it.

I have personal experience with this. I was ranking in the top ten for the term "game of thrones"...

...

...in my friend's search results who had a friend who +1 a post of mine. It only mattered while he was logged into his Google account. This is probably what they were alluding to. They were hoping to crowd source their search results with your friends recommendations. I'm not sure if they still do this though. This was like 5-6 years ago.

+1 good content
+2 strong links
3-200, some other bullshit from 7$WSO disneyland

I always belived in that.
I mean, they control everything, then they wanted to have the best social media platform, why not making it a ranking factor and forcing people to use it?

why not making it a ranking factor and forcing people to use it?

I would imagine it is because Social Media is more about getting the masses on board and using the platform rather than a tiny percentage who care about ranking in Google.
