Why am I getting $1 for 10,000 views?

Change your niche. Research and find a niche that is profitable.

Just when I was thinking that the music niche would be almost completely unaffected by the recent changes. The music niche made me decent money and it's supposed to be quite advertiser friendly. Who wouldn't want to place their ads on a video of Justin Bieber or a rap song? Maybe the word "gay" in my video had it blacklisted, right?

Does anyone know if these controversial political channels (ex: alt-right) are making more money 1,000 per views?

May be. But i don't think youtube would blacklist the word. Is it happening continuously?

That's the only popular video on my channel, so I couldn't really tell you. And not YouTube, but the advertisers themselves could exclude advertising on any videos with words such as "gay", "sexy", "feminist", or "Trump" because they want to disassociate themselves with those subjects to keep their brands clean.

I actually have zero cat videos on my channel. The cat and meme niches are oversaturated.

Stock Trading is a niche in which advertisers will promote good products so pay is good Just think about the advertisers what they can earn by promoting on a music niche.
Your niche has less advertisers and thus less pay.

OP, I guess you haven't seen the news everywhere for the last 2 months about tons of youtube advertisers dropping their ads from YouTube? This happened because their ads were being played on racist, disturbing, profanity etc videos that they did not want their brand associated with. Basically a few bad apples and 1 article about this ruined it for everyone. This is the current state of youtube, it should get better with time though as advertisers slowly come back.

NOTE: You may be getting worse stats than others, but in general I think the above is more so the issue you're running into. Ads are also based around your niche etc, so that could be the other issue.

I recently went from $1 per 10,000 views to $1 per 2,500 to 3,500 views. I'm still trying to get at least $1 per 1,000 views.

Of course but your analogy makes it like this. You start a youtube chann - > you have no subs - > quit youtube.
I understand what you're saying in a way but you got to put work in your videos either in quality, quantity or both.

it's probably your niche. I had a video that was related to college admissions and I made $5 cpm. I think that was a profitable thing to make videos on. If you want to see what niches make the most cpm, I guess you could make an adwords account and research cpm for certain keywords and phrases. Also, if your video contains inappropriate/controversial content, YouTube is not going to put many ads on your videos.
