Why am I getting $1 for 10,000 views?

I uploaded a video earlier this month and so far it has gotten over 40,000 views. However, I only generated $4 with the video! What the hell is going on? Has YouTube really sunken this low? I remember getting about $1 for every 1,000-3,000 views last year and prior.

The vast majority of my traffic is coming from the US and other 1st world countries. I'm not under a MCN. The average video watch time is 3:30. Although I connected my channel to Vydia once, it has been since disconnected and my MCN is "none" according to SocialBlade and extension plugins like VidIQ. It's also not connected to my Google account and on the Vydia site, my account shows up as "not connected."

Is anyone also getting low YouTube payout rates?

I've seen some pretty big and growing channels promoting their Patreons, but they barely get money from that either from what I've seen.

My video is in the music niche and one of the keywords/title words for the video is "Gay" since it talks about an openly gay artist. The music niche I'm in includes the "Before [musician] Was Famous" type videos, interviews, music news, music videos, albums, and songs.

Lack of advertiser basically means no advertisement or very few. Less earning.

Things change. It's still very possible to make good money with adsense, but you have to find a niche that's profitable and ad friendly. Use websites and tools to check estimated revenue for channels in your niche. Study what they're doing, then find your own lane. Or just copy what they're doing and adjust. If you get big, it's always better to be in an MCN that will offer a higher CPM.

Might be true. Last week certain days weren't showing me estimated earnings, a few days later they popped up.

I just checked my video and it's nearly frozen at 40,000 views. YouTube was obviously promoting the video within the first few days via the "Suggested videos" feature and then suddenly stopped. Now I'm barely getting any views. The audience retention for the video is between 35% and 50%. Awful shit that I rarely experienced in the past with other promising, trending videos. It used to take a few weeks or months before a successful video's popularity began to fade.
