First of all I wish all you guys a happy feast day or eid al fitr from a Christian.
Whilst religon is not normally allowed I believe, it is nice to know that we all - as human beings - can share and embrace different cultures and religions,
and show respect for one another to celebrate feast days such as this.
Much of this is in fact an education to many others, and we all need to come together,
and for ALL, we should up our eyes and ears, and see them, not as a threat and danger,
but principled and decent folk, just like all decent folk.
I am reminded to quote a member here who has educated me immensly on such matters.

Fasting during the month of Ramadan has been set obligatory by God through the Book (Quran), and the teachings of the Prophet.
The point of fasting isn't just limited to not eating and not drinking from sunrise to sunset, but also to abstain from sin like gossip, saying lies, smoking, adultery, etc, etc etc. In general, it is a challenge to control our desires and be a better person, if we can abstain from our daily bad habits for a month, then without a doubt, this proves that we can really stop these bad habits in our lives, and become a better person.
The not eating and not drinking part also helps us to really experience and feel what the poor and needy feel on a regular basis, therefore it is encouraged to do good deeds, feed the poor and hungry, and take care of the needy.
During/at the end of Ramadan, the Islamic "tax" known as "zakat" should be paid out.
WHAT? Tax in Islam? Another Ponzi "religion"?!
Actually no, the zakat has a very specific way of being calculated which I will not go into detail about, you can google it for yourself. Basically, it is one-fortieth (1/40) in other words 2.5% of the value of your wealth (wealth is calculated specifically as mentioned before).
And this 2.5% goes directly to the poor and needy. It does not have to go to a Mosque or a foundation or charity, but it's best to be given directly to the needy. If you do not know or have access to someone directly then the money can go to orphanages, hospitals, elderly houses, refugees, or any other place that you are confident that the money is needed and it will be put to good use.
Doesn't sound so barbaric after all does it? 
On another note:
War, killings, conflicts, even heated arguments are FORBIDDEN during the month of Ramadan. So I'd like to point out that ISIS isn't representing Islam as their actions will not cease during Ramadan which clearly goes against the core values of Islam.
