Lock down old threads after certain amount of time.

Hi, sometimes i see old thread being bumped by newbies may be unintentionally or intentionally. I myself had replied in such a thread without realising post date as i was on mobile and thread was on homepage(though i didnt get any infraction, thatnks to mods). But still its not good to keep on posting on old post juat for sake of increasing post counts. For thia i propose automatic lockdown of thread after x period of time. I know its a easy task and some addon should be there in xenforo for this.

I don't agree with your philosophy here. Old threads aren't bumped for post count tallies, rather what was relevant to the person bumping the post was most likely the original op's content and a user found it relevant enough to what they were currently looking for to up and say something regarding that particular topic. As newer and newer technology is created, going back to some of the older postings containing relevant information on a current topic, or a tool that someone once developed, and now folks are looking for again is not necessarily a bad thing. Re-inventing the wheel by starting a new thread over the same topic is pointless. If the question has already been asked, bumping the thread brings that topic back into the spotlight once again for more relevant information on that topic.

Threads in Hire a Freelancer / Want to Buy and in few sections other too which are years old and doesn't have any significant value can be locked down.

Yeah, like @Debian said, most newbies actually come across BHW through results in google. That's how I first came across this site (looking for ways to monetize IG).
And a lot of times those people that came across a BHW thread on google just create a BHW account so they can post on the thread, paying no attention to the post date since they don't know that such things are frowned upon on BHW.

Anyways, yes, regardless of how old (or new) a thread is, a comment that's not relevant to the thread or a comment that doesn't offer any value shouldn't be posted. In this case (I saw this happen a couple of days ago), the MOD will delete the comment that was obviously placed with the sole intention to increase the post count which will drop the thread back down.

A system in place that automatically closes threads based on their age could be quite an issue as there are plenty of aged and indexed threads that receive organic traffic and it's important that individuals who land on these threads have the opportunity to interact with the thread. If the thread is closed simply based on the date in which it was posted then a comment wouldn't be able to be placed which could deter the user from the forum.

There are many cases in which old threads are legitimately bumped by users for one reason or another and I don't believe that closing these threads would solve anything.

With that said, threads are only closed when the OP requests for it to be closed, when a marketplace seller is banned or when the thread is getting out of hand from users bashing each other (which thankfully rarely happens since everyone gets along so nicely ;)).

Regardless, to me, the section in which it was posted was trivial compared to the matter of the topic and I was more interested in providing my feedback (hence the response).

If you see a thread that makes sense to lock down, please report it.

We do not lock all old threads down as there is sometimes value in leaving it open to new comments but there are times it makes sense to lock them down.

HAF and WTB threads are often locked down once we see someone responding to an old thread, or if it becomes a flea market where people are making all kinds of offers no matter who, what, where, when or how, but the staff does not always catch it and thus we rely on the community to help police the community.
 
All people need to do is check the OP to see if they're still active on here, so if it's a giveaway from 2015 and OP hasn't been on since Jan 2016, there's not much chance of them giving anything away.

I usually go through the HAF and WTB section once a day to delete posts by thread bumpers and lock the old threads. However, I tend to miss the flea market threads due to the way I go through these sections. This is why it's important for members to report problematic threads when they see them.

If any of you need an example of a flea market thread, here's one I locked down a few minutes ago.

Notice how ghetto it is. You'll see two things in these types of threads:
  • People bumping the thread just to advertise.
  • People hijacking the thread instead of creating their own WTB thread.

Most browsers have pop-up blockers these days.

I guess it depends on what the thread is about. I agree to the lockdown if it's about a for hire post or a sale post and the likes. But I don't agree to the lockdown of old topics if these are being bumped up because it's relevant again. As a newbie myself, I find the old replies of that old thread helpful sometimes, there's also the opportunity to correct or update. Just my two cents.
