[Case Study] 40 Sales Letters (Webdesign)

So because I think that offline marketing looks like a very good way to earn some bigger $$$ I decided to give it a try. I registered a new domain, created an eye-catching webdesign, uploaded contact form, order form, etc.

By the beginning of next week I will be sending at least 10 sales letters to local businesses and offering a cheap new webdesign. During the week I will send 30 more. Actually, it's copy of Wasted's method but with my own twists.

Basically I've found loads of disgusting, distasteful, repulsive and nasty (I don't know the best word in English so I am using more of them) websites with addresses of the business owners. I made a printscreen of the website, got it into PC monitor PSD template and then I made a draft of better one and got it into this template too (see picture of template below). Wrote some basic info about the service and available discounts, etc etc etc

I will be charging $50 (minimum) up to $180 + some upsells.

We will see how it's going. I will be updating often.

Expenses so far:
$10 domain
$1 hosting / 1st month
$2.50 envelopes
$13.50 total

A website for $50 - no serious businessperson will buy a site that cheap.

Someone who wants a website actually wants someone to spend time on it and do revisions.

People don't associate cheap with quality - look at $1,000 as a minimum and you are more likely to get takers.
 
It's obvious you're living in a expensive country. So much money are not charging even the most expensive companies :D

But thanks for the idea, I know it's still low. I will be giving them a HUGE discount (the prices I've written are after discount off) just that I am starting with this.

If there is some good interest I will be charging few times more of course.
 
^^^100% true. If someone pitched me a website for $50 I would think that they were a kid, or someone with zero skill. $50???? I would also think that they would spend a total of 3 seconds working on a website for that amount of money.

Is your time/skill ONLY worth $50? If the answer is "Yes" then stop while you are ahead.

No idea where you are from...but call some large web design firms in your area...pretend you are a business owner...get some ideas of cost...then you can try to price yourself in order to be competitive. Just don't low ball yourself. Your time and skill is worth more than that. Spend a day calling companies so you know where to price yourself - don't be afraid to make money :D
 
Thanks guys for your opinions and I know you're right! However, I will try it. It's only an experiment. I can do few websites for $50 - $180 prices, get some reviews and experiences and then I will see what's the matter. :D

Well.. I will send the first 10 sales letters with the prices I've written. Just for the purpose of the experiment. Then I think I can try to offer more expensive in next letters. Thanks!

Really, you should go with $50 month if you want to go with such low price. I wish you good luck.
 
This is one of the reason some clients ask me to create a website for $100, because they think some teenagers behind PC is clicking the mouse and whoa! Website is done..Go for $1000 bro, you'll make more plus your client will treat you seriously.

Glad to see another journey into offline marketing with snail mail! Like the comments above $50 does seem a little less to a local business's point of view. If you're targeting students, local street artists, or similar less professional businesses, $50 might seem like a much better value.

Exactly, I'm targeting not so big and successful businesses so even the $50 could probably be very enough for them. (And maybe they won't buy the bigger packages.. I'm just curious and as I said before it's only an experiment.)

in indonesia some site i found pricing 500 bucks

listen to others dude

Let's assume you want to earn $10.000 bucks...

...and do the math. To get some numbers in here that will make it easy for you to follow the advice of those way more expierenced guys in here that are giving you their diamonds.

Let's say your letter converts at 10% & assume delivering one deal takes you 3 hours.

To get $10.000 at $50/site, you'll have to:
Serve 10.000/50 = 200 clients
To get them, you'll have to mail 200/10*100 = 2.000 pieces
And to serve them you'll work about 200*3 = 600 hours

Now think of charging $400 per site. To get 10.000$ you need to...
serve 10.000/400 = 25 clients
Mail out 25/10*100 = 250 pieces
& work just 25*3 = 75 hours

Nearly everyone will verify to you: Getting 25 clients at $400 is just as hard as getting them at $50 bucks. So decide now. Wanna work your a** off for peanuts? Or do what big earners like netmoney suggest to you and charge what you're worth.

Nope, I don't expect to make $10.000 with 40 sales letters and these prices. ;)

Everything I want is to test few different sales letter versions and price ranges and then decide which way is best for me in my area.

Just bear in mind that in your timings you will spend far more time speaking to the client and agreeing what they want than actually designing the site.

Designing the site is the easy bit.
 
UPDATE 8/27/13

So few minutes ago I've sent first 10 sales letters.

Thanks to your suggestions I have been thinking about it a little bit more and I decided to raise my prices.
Now I'm charging $100 up to $600 + some upsells.

However... as I said before. These first 10 letters are including a huge discount 50% (so basically there is an option to buy the smallest package for $50). But listen, even $50 is good money for me for so small work which the smallest package definitely is. ;) And if my prospects are somehow well interested I will raise the price even more in the future.

In next 30 letters I will be offering other prices (f.e. 10 letters 30% discount, 10 letters 10% discount, 10 letters no discount). I'm just split testing to make sure. I am also using different sales letters - yesterday I shared 100 greatest sales letters of all time (in this thread here). I took one of them and changed it a little for my purposes.

Please note: Because of lack of colorful cartridges in my printer :D, I had to move to other method. I'm not using Wasted's method for now. (But I will come back to it soon.) I just scraped (using free app called OutWit hub) our local directory of small businesses, made list of those without website and offered them to make one.

Expenses so far:
$10 domain
$1 hosting / 1st month
$4 envelopes
$6.50 post fees

Expenses total: $21.50
Earnings total: $0.00

There was also one mad mistake I did. I put the letters with prospects' names on each of them in the envelopes and guess what.

UPDATE 9/3/13

Today sent 13 letters. 23 letters sent in total. No client yet.

17 letters remaining to the goal. However, I will probably send up to 100 letters total even in the case I would get no clients within the first 40 letters. We will see.
