YouTubers making names with views in them?

Is there some kind of marketing strategy behind this or are they just doing it just because? I'd really like to know.

I saw that haha. I got tricked by it and I consider myself relatively savvy so I think it could work but you abandon possible channel branding. When people see something like 20 million views they want to click and that is the reason I clicked too. It depends on the content you make I guess.
