not entirely true, some people still cashing $2k-$3k from using VPN and clicking ads in their own website. some stay low and satisfied with $200-$300/mo. I'm not doing it btw, but I join some fb group talking about this trick, and it's pretty interesting (tho I probably won't do it ever, since I prefer long term original content youtube)

I agree that some people bank hard doing it, but they know what they're doing, what works, and what does not.
It's just not as easy as before, so a newbie has no chance of surviving. As opposed to focusing on short-term strategies, they should be focusing on the long-term like you have been.
