Do Youtube vids get put into SERPS because of backlinks to the video or because of video hits/ratings?

I believe because Google owns Youtube. So If there are popular videos on that certain keyword that youtube video will show up

I did some research on my own and I can find examples of videos with no backlinks to their page that get placed above the #1 search result for longtail terms. So at least for longtail terms you can get a video on the page just by increasing views and ratings.
