I'm just wondering if any of you can give your thoughts on what you think Youtube take into account when deciding which videos will rank 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.

Do you think Google now use a similar sort of algorithm that they do with Google.com such as links pointing to the video?

Here's a few things that when using common sense, think what Youtube use:

    - Subscribers (the more subscribers then surely, the more interest the channel and video clips have?)
    - Comments+Ratings (excluding imbedded views) to views ratio. A lot of views but low comments/ratings won't help in the importance.
    - tags (pretty obvious - perhaps the tags that are entered first get more weight)
    - Title + Description: Like Google use for websites, they take into account the words used in the video title and the video description.
    - Links pointing to the video clip.

What's your thoughts on the above and anything to add?

    Cheers in advance.

I believe its mostly what you said, maybe they put the rising videos on top too.

    Thanks for the reply.

How do you mean 'rising videos'?

As in, the video has just gotten uploaded a few days ago, and it already has hundreds of thousands of views (for example).

    Right I get ya.

Another possible is the date and time the clip was uploaded. I often see whoever uploads a certain clip (such as latest news) first, gets a higher ranking than those who upload it after.

The downside to this, is some people simply change the title and description of an older clip that they have in their channel, in an attempt to get the extra traffic - and then add affiliate links all over the shop.

Yeah, i tried the latest news thing when Michael Jackson died, xD, got a few thousand views, but that exposure also comes from the amount of subscribers you have, so yeah...

subscribers has A LOT to do with it. Once you upload a video it is viewed by them. And this initial surge of views "jumpstarts" youtube to give your video higher placement over others.

Its about timing as well. I uploaded a "glitch" of a video game, just at the right time, and it got 150,000+ views, within a week, and now a month later its only gone up to 253,000. It was ranked first for the keyword, and it was ranked first in Google seach for the keyword.

    So its timing, timing, timing.

I uploaded a video from Britain's Got Talent the other month and it got approx 130,000 views in it's first week. But like mentioned above, in the 2nd week only went up around 20-30,000. I think the reason for this is, is a show from the USA (USA Today?) linked to it from one of it's main pages, so shed loads of people were coming through. I also got a lot of subscribers though so that's helping me newer videos.

Yes, IMO views are the best what rank the video higher, so more views = better ranking. Second is the likes what also helps much the video to rank.
