Once of the mysteries of the universe is WHY DONT HTTP WEBREQUEST WORK with views on youtube?

I know that over the years, this has been patched, but what I DON'T know is how it was patched and how YouTube can continue to count views without a request. There are clearly other factors as to what is needed when you connect to a website, but to me, it just doesn't make much sense as to why it doesn't work.

I may sound like a noob, but i wanted to get some of the nooby historical questions out of the way.

Because the watch-page doesn't count the views (video stream counts the views I think), however it does relay information such as your refer. Well that is what I've come to the conclusion of, already tried spamming web-requests to get views.

Download a firefox plugin called "HttpFox". Use it to view the GET requests made by the browser/SWF player. You will see there's a lot more going on. Simply downloading the /watch page isn't what increases the views. It's the SWF player that sends out a GET request once it has loaded and started playing the video (s.youtube.com).

The first 300 views which show up instantly are caused by the "http://www.youtube.com/get_video?" request but these aren't sent/are ignored after the first 300 views. If you've been attempting to make a view bot, you will find that this request is very easy to emulate. The first 300 views can be considered a "fake" view counter. They aren't your real views, and they will show even if you don't send the s.youtube.com request (the main request for the real view counter). It's more for show. Only the /watch video player will send out the "http://www.youtube.com/get_video?" request. Embedded videos (such as those on facebook) will not for whatever reason. This is why all those views from facebook don't show up instantly even up to 300.

If you want to make the fastest and most efficient view bot, you will need to learn how to emulate these get requests accurately so you won't even need to load and play the SWF player. Simply refreshing the video is far too slow.

Well because if you ran a quick WireShark you'd see the watch page isn't the one that counts the view. Why do you think we don't have a million view bots already?

its the s.youtube no?

looking at the infomation about it in the networking tab says it the video stats server :/
with quite a few cookies and variables and some in the url

It makes sense that the video itself doesn't count as a view, otherwise you could replay videos over and over (despite it having fully streamed) and it would count as a view. Would make more sense if something like a SWF player is activated and once data has been confirmed to be sending, youtube probably count that as a view.
